http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap100...lly-underrated

Maybe it's the legal issues. Perhaps it's the unorthodox playing style. It could be his legitimately worrisome struggle to stay healthy.

Whatever the reason, Ben Roethlisberger is severely underrated. I'm writing about it because Roethlisberger was ranked No. 61 on the latest "Top 100 Players of 2013" show, but it's not just about this show. It's about how Big Ben is viewed by a large swath of the football populace.

Roethlisberger, now 31 years old, has spent nine seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers. It's a career that probably will end as a first ballot Hall of Famer in Canton, yet he's rarely talked about as one of the best quarterbacks of his era. This is despite the fact that he throws perhaps the best deep ball in the NFL. He's one of the most difficult quarterbacks to get down on the ground.

"Ben Roethlisberger is the Pittsburgh Steelers," his former offensive coordinator Bruce Arians said on Thursday's Top 100 reaction show.

It's not like Roethlisberger's numbers are poor.

Roethlisberger is sixth in NFL history in yards-per-attempt, finishing in the top three in a season six times. Only Aaron Rodgers has a higher career average among active players. It feels like Roethlisberger is coming off a down year because the Steelers lost so many close games, but he still threw 26 touchdowns with only eight interceptions. In a down year.

A lot of folks knock Roethlisberger because the Steelers carried him in Super Bowl XL against the Seattle Seahawks, but they forget he led the league in yards-per-attempt and touchdowns-per-throw that year. He's not Peyton Manning or Tom Brady, but that's not the point. He gives the Steelers a chance to win the title every year. He's been near the top of the quarterback game every season since 2005. He's just hitting the sweet spot of his career, where the mental side of his game is catching up to his physical abilities.

And yet Roethlisberger barely rated in the Top 100 over Chris Johnson and Stephen Tulloch. Twelve quarterbacks are ranked ahead of Roethlisberger. Please.

History will look back at Roethlisberger as one of the greats, but for some reason we can't see that now.

I thought I'd bring up this rule change if it hasn't already been discussed. Basically it means that if a runner with the ball runs 3 yards past the line of scrimmage, he can't lower their helmet to meet an oncoming defensive player.

Maybe I might be panicking a bit considering that the great backs lower the head inside the 3 yards and fight for the extra 1 or 2 yards but can you imagine the amount of f**king flags that will be thrown next season. I'm dying to know how the Rooney's voted on this rule I can't find any info on it.

Also I wonder if the rule change had an influence in taking Bell over Lacy apart from Lacy's Toe injury. Apparently Lacy has a tendency to drop the helmet and make contact unlike Bell who will try to avoid the tackle if possible. Bell tends to run upright which is considered a bad habit unless you had the balance of Jim Brown. Bell's and Lacy's strengths and weaknesses have literally been swapped because of this rule change.

Is the Bell pick a result of the rule change that came in March before the draft or am I thinking it to it too much?

Oh and its worth a 15 yard penalty from the spot of the foul too.

Troy Polamalu redefined the role for an NFL safety with his versatility and playmaking skills, but Steelers teammate Ryan Clark thinks he's only the No. 3 player at his position right now.

Clark, appearing as a guest commentator on ESPN, said he wished he could rank Polamalu ahead of Earl Thomas of Seattle and Dashon Goldson of Tampa Bay, but he can't.

“This was a decision for me,” Clark said of ranking Polamalu third among his top five safeties in the league. “Here is a guy I really want to put at No. 1, but he's had some injuries over the past few years and hasn't been as effective. He's a guy I feel like can be No. 1 if we get him back fully healthy.”

Polamalu missed nine games with a torn calf last season, and his absence clearly affected a Steelers defense that nevertheless finished No. 1 in the league. Clark has played alongside Polamalu since 2006 and he bragged about his skills.

“Anticipation, just innate ability to know the snap count, or know where receivers want to go, know where a quarterback wants to throw the ball,” Clark said on ESPN's NFL Live. “He's been an awesome player for years and years in this league.”

By Ed Bouchette / Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Man landed on the moon the year Joe Greene first joined the Steelers in 1969. Many thought that was an easier accomplishment than him helping the team win a championship.

He helped them win six.

Joe Greene, 66, retired Monday from the Steelers, leaving his third different job with them for a third time. This retirement, he said, is permanent. The Pro Football Hall of Fame defensive tackle and cornerstone of the 1970s Super Bowl dynasty that forever changed the face of a losing franchise announced his retirement after nine years as a special assistant for pro and college personnel for general manager Kevin Colbert.
It marks the end of a 27-year career for Greene with the Steelers, including 13 as a player and five as a defensive line coach under Hall of Fame coach Chuck Noll.

"I was very fortunate to have worked for the Steelers, the Rooneys and Chuck," Greene said from his Flower Mound, Texas, home near Dallas. "I know without a doubt the reason I got a job with Pittsburgh for coaching was because of Chuck. He trusted me as a guy who hadn't coached before and he thought I had the wherewithal to do it. I think he was right. I know he was right.

"The Steelers have influenced everything I've done as an adult."

Greene's most memorable moment with the Steelers came when they beat the Raiders in Oakland in the 1974 AFC championship game to advance to their first Super Bowl.

"That was always the highlight for me, going from 1-13 my rookie season to all the years we worked hard and really didn't get to the game. ... That was just the best moment, and then we kept stacking moments on top of that, but that was the one for me.

"Winning the Super Bowl was obviously a great one, but the joy I felt of going to the Super Bowl, it was what I felt about the Pittsburgh Steelers and where we came from, the history of us to that point."

The Steelers had not won a playoff game until 1972 and, after beating Oakland in that AFC title game in 1974, they would make it four Super Bowl championships in six years, with Greene the unquestioned leader of the Steel Curtain defense. He would pocket two more Super Bowl rings in his role as a scout in this century.

This third retirement was much easier for him than the previous two.

"The football after 13 years, that was quite emotional because at that time it was all I knew," Greene said. "That was quite emotional for sure."

Noll hired him to coach his defensive line in 1987 and, after five years of doing so, Greene was a finalist to succeed Noll after the coach's retirement following the 1991 season. But when the job went to Bill Cowher, and the new coach did not keep Greene on his staff.

"When Chuck retired and I basically got fired, that was definitely emotional," Greene recalled.

Noll put in a good word for him with another Hall of Fame coach, and Don Shula hired him on the spot without an interview to coach his defensive line in Miami. He coached for the Dolphins (1992-95) and Arizona Cardinals (1996-2003) and worked briefly as an analyst for CBS Sports.

The Steelers essentially created a job in their scouting department for him after the Cardinals let him go.

"Dan [Rooney] told me to come back to Pittsburgh," Greene said. "I said I'd love to. Obviously, he and coach Cowher and Kevin Colbert put their heads together and made it work.

"I was back doing a job I thought I could do because I did bits and pieces all my coaching career, and it was a wonderful thing to get a full breadth of scouting. Those guys, Kevin and all those scouts, I learned from them. It's not easy."

Said Steelers president Art Rooney in the team's announcement on Greene, "There are very few people in the history of the NFL who have had a greater impact on one franchise than Joe Greene has had on the Pittsburgh Steelers.

"As a player, Joe was the cornerstone of the greatest defense of all time. As a coach, Joe helped Chuck Noll finish his tenure as head coach. Then we were fortunate to have Joe rejoin the organization in our player personnel department for the last nine years, which included two more Super Bowl championships. Joe has been an inspiration in this organization in many different capacities over so many years. We will miss Joe Greene, but he will certainly continue to serve as an ambassador of this organization for many years."

Greene said he will spend more time with his wife, Agnes, and his family, which includes three children and seven grandchildren.

He leaves the Steelers a different franchise than the one he joined in 1969. Today, a .500 record is a bitter disappointment for a team whose fans expect it to compete for a Super Bowl annually.

"That's a good thing because I don't think we want to lose that, the pursuit of winning a Super Bowl," Greene said. "That was what Chuck told us in his first meeting, that the goal was to win the Super Bowl. It took us six years before we did it."

But then they kept coming, and a big reason was the arrival of Joe Greene.

If the Steelers ever win another, it would be the first one without him.

"I feel very very proud and fortunate to have been a part of that group," Greene said. "It didn't start out that way. The organization was able to select players that had a like mind-set or developed that mind-set. We were able to stay focused like that for the most part over these years. That's really what it's about, a group of guys, an organization all pulling simultaneously at the same end of the rope.

"I'll miss them, miss being up there. It was a special part of my life for sure."

The Steelers have struck a deal with ex-Jaguars offensive tackle Guy Whimper, the team said Monday.

Whimper, who turns 30 later this month, provides depth behind Mike Adams and Marcus Gilbert, who are expected to start at tackle. Whimper (6-5, 302) has made 19 starts at right tackle in the last two seasons; should he make the Steelers’ roster, he could be the first tackle off the bench.

It’s unclear how the Steelers will line up at the tackle spots in 2013, but Whimper is ideally a right tackle and would only likely get a look on the left side if Pittsburgh were in a pinch.

Max Starks, who was Pittsburgh’s starting left tackle in 2012, remains unsigned. He could appeal to another looking for a short-term option on the left side, and it’s conceivable the Steelers could again call upon him if injuries were to strike...

Receiver Wheaton could make biggest splash among Steelers’ rookies

By Alan Robinson

Published: Thursday, May 2, 2013, 11:36 p.m.

Jarvis Jones could come in and start immediately. Le'Veon Bell could come in and start immediately. But Markus Wheaton could be the rookie from the Steelers' Class of 2013 who makes the biggest impact.

Forget the comparisons to Mike Wallace, the receiver he might replace — if not in the lineup, then as the Steelers' best deep threat. While Wheaton is exceptionally fast, especially after making the catch, he is not Wallace-fast.

He won't have to be to still be effective in Todd Haley's offense, which values quick throws to receivers who run precise routes to get open in heavy traffic.

“Markus Wheaton is a very good route runner who is coming into the NFL and will be ready to play right away,” ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. said.

Wheaton, the leading receiver in Oregon State history, fell to the Steelers in the third round partly because of his 4.45 time in the 40 at the NFL Scouting Combine. Jones, the Georgia outside linebacker, slipped to No. 17 overall partly because of his 40 time, too.

Wheaton says he had run in the 4.3s during other workouts, just not the one that counted.

“I know it probably hurt his feelings and made him feel bad, but we were happy because, when you put the tape on, he plays fast,” Haley said of Wheaton, who caught 91 passes for 1,244 yards and 11 touchdowns last season. “He's a fast player and quick. He's an exciting guy to have around.”

Haley also called Wheaton “a versatile, good, polished” player. And while Wallace had game-changing speed, the word “polished” wasn't used to describe him coming out of Mississippi, also as a third-round pick.

That route-running ability and Wheaton's dependable hands could be more assets for the Steelers from the start in a year in which the top four picks — Jones, Bell, Wheaton and safety Shamarko Thomas — could make major contributions.

“A little different skill set than Mike other than the speed,” Haley said. “I saw Mike as more of an outside receiver outside the numbers. This guy has played the slot a bunch when he wasn't outside. He is a little wider base, a little more running back.”

Wheaton had 18 catches for 20 yards or more last season, yet also ran for 631 yards and five touchdowns during a career in which he caught 227 passes.

His ability to line up as the ‘X' receiver, which Wallace played almost exclusively, but also as the “Z” receiver and in the slot is certain to be utilized by new receivers coach Richard Mann, who is strong on fundamentals and technique.

“He was in the slot. He was in the backfield,” Haley said. “That tells us he's a smart guy. Any time a coach feels comfortable moving a guy around a bunch like that, that's good.”

Wheaton said he can envision himself “anywhere” in the Steelers' offense because “I like being all over the place. The defense can't plan for you when they don't know where you're going to be.”

Wheaton and 40 other Steelers rookies and first-year players will start a three-day minicamp on the South Side on Friday. The group includes the team's nine draft choices, the undrafted rookie free agents and nine first-year players who previously signed an NFL contract but did not accrue pension time.

There will be two quarterbacks — fourth-round pick Landry Jones of Oklahoma and undrafted rookie Caleb TerBush of Purdue. And Ryan Clarke, a running back from West Virginia.

This may turn out to be our best pick. I certainly hope he steps right in, sort of like Brown did, who was probably the best surprise we had in that draft.

So long, Charlie Batch.

Not that you'll be far away if the Steelers have an emergency. As you put it Sunday morning, “I'll be right up the street. If they call, I'll be there.”

For now, though, it looks like the end of the line. Looks like you've thrown your final pass, which, for the record, was a 10-yard completion to Mike Wallace on an impossibly dramatic drive in Baltimore.

Publicly, you expressed confidence the Steelers would bring you back. It would have been your 12th go-round since the man who drafted you in Detroit — Kevin Colbert — brought you here. But that was before they signed Bruce Gradkowski and drafted Landry Jones.

Your first thought when that happened?

“If this is it, and I don't put that Steeler uniform on again, I can say it's been an amazing 11 years.”

It's been a fairy tale, actually, Charlie: Homestead kid returns, helps team win two Super Bowls — particularly Super Bowl XL, when you won two big November games — and establishes a powerful off-field legacy through the Best of The Batch Foundation.

People should know that you were neither surprised nor embittered by the moves, because you have so much respect for how Colbert and the Rooneys go about their business.

This is how you phrased it: “I had a feeling this was coming. I knew they wanted to get younger.”

Nobody can dispute this, Charlie: You authored one mighty compelling final chapter. That win at Baltimore, three days before your 38th birthday, likely goes down as your final start.

When I reflect on your 11 years and see one image, it's you and Ben embracing for what seemed like 10 minutes after the winning kick. You were coming off a nightmarish performance in Cleveland. People said you couldn't play anymore.

So how was that for a fantastic finish?

“When I looked at it realistically, I said, ‘This may be my last game ever starting — and it couldn't be any tougher.' I mean, it was on the road, in front of 71,000 people against a team that hadn't lost at home in 15 games.

“To go into that situation, and then you tell me we're going to get the ball at our 15 with 6:14 left, go 51 yards, kick the winning field goal with no time left and silence those 71,000 people?

“Wow. What better feeling could you have?”

Well, there's one. As you explain it, Charlie, it came three days before the Super Bowl, at the NFL Players Association's state-of-the-union news conference in New Orleans. That's when you received the Byron “Whizzer” White Award for “benefiting society through outstanding devotion to philanthropic efforts.”

The union says it's the highest honor it bestows. Your teammates nominated you, and the Players Association chose you from among five finalists.

You're still amazed.

“Over 1,900 NFL players, and here it is this kid from Homestead is Man of the Year in the Players Association? When my name was announced, I was in shock.”

It was yet another validation of the impact your foundation (batchfoundation.org) has in the community. You'll have 365 kids in your basketball league again, and May 13 you'll take 100 kids on your annual trek to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

What did you say happened at the Hall last year? The kids spotted then-Cleveland Browns coach Pat Shurmur and serenaded him with a “Here We Go, Steelers!” chant?

“Yes, and they talked about it the whole way home.”

If this is the end, Charlie, let me tell you: You've been a testament to teamwork and the art of preparation. You started nine games in 11 years, yet you almost always gave your team a great chance to win. Your influence on Roethlisberger was immeasurable.

Speaking of which, how will the big personalities of Ben and Todd Haley mesh in that quarterbacks room now that their buffer is gone?

You're laughing, Charlie.

“I can't tell you. I don't know.”

That's a cryptic answer.

“Four months have gone by. Things can change. I guess we'll find out in September. You don't see how things play out behind the scenes. The only thing you can go by is what the team wants you to believe. Will you see what you saw in September, when they said everything's OK? Or will you see what you saw in December in Dallas, where the frustration boiled over?”

Hmmm. Well, we know we'll see plenty of you, Charlie, doing what you do best: helping young people. And if the Steelers need you, they know where to look.

Right up the street.
