Default 6 Panthers going to NFL combine

6 Panthers going to NFL combine
    Tuesday, February 22, 2011
    By Paul Zeise, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Six Pitt football players were selected to participate in the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis Wednesday through Tuesday.

And, while all six players likely will be drafted, all come with question and there is little, if any, consensus about which round they might be picked.

The best example is wide receiver Jon Baldwin, who is listed as high as the second-best receiver in the draft. Some scouts think he could be a late first-round pick.

That is no surprise given that he stands 6 foot 5,has a 42-inch vertical leap and has been timed in the 40-yard dash in 4.38 seconds.

But questions abound about his work ethic and route-running, so his combine performance and interviews will be important.

Another player needing to make a good impression is defensive end Greg Romeus, whose season was a nearly complete washout because of back and knee injuries.

Romeus was considered a late first- or early second-round pick before the season but is likely to be a middle-round pick at best.

Tailback Dion Lewis is projected as a third or fourth rounder but could improve that with a good 40-yard dash time.

Offensive tackle Jason Pinkston, like Baldwin, has a lot of natural ability scouts like, but some question his focus.

The one Panther whose stock has improved is defensive end Jabaal Sheard.

He has shown enough to convince scouts he could make the jump to the outside linebacker spot in a 3-4 defense -- similar to the transition made by Steelers star LaMarr Woodley.

The other former Panther headed for Indianapolis is fullback Henry Hynoski, who is rated the top fullback in the draft by several scouting services. But his prospects depend on which teams, if any, want a traditional fullback.

All six players, along with the rest of the Panthers seniors, will have another chance to impress scouts at Pitt's annual pro timing day March 15.

If I had to guess pre-combine:

Baldwin: Somewhere in the 40-50 range
    Pinkston: Late second-early third
    Sheard: Third round project
    Romeus: Fifth
Lewis: Fifth (Good combine could push him toward the late third -- too many good RB in this draft)
Hynoski: Seventh (probably equally likely that he goes in the fifth or goes undrafted)
