Default Pens Could Be Done With Their Trades

Pens not close on more trades as NHL deadline approaches
    By Rob Rossi, PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW
    Sunday, February 27, 2011

As of this afternoon the Penguins were not close on any trades to acquire more players before the NHL deadline. The deadline expires Monday at 3 p.m.

General manager Ray Shero has not ruled out another move before the deadline, though his acquisitions last week of wingers Alex Kovalev and James Neal and defenseman Matt Niskanen have already addressed perceived needs.

However, with the weeks leading up to this deadline providing more trades than in any season since the 2004-05 lockout, there are fewer available players for contending clubs.

There are fewer clubs out of contention, too. As of yesterday, 25 of 30 teams were within 10 points of a playoff spot.

Shero said Thursday that the Penguins have room under the NHLís $59.4 million salary cap because injured center Evgeni Malkinís $8.7 million prorated salary no longer counts against their cap total given his placement on the long-term injury list.

The Penguins (37-21-6, 80 points) figure to upgrade even if they donít make a move.

They made room on their roster yesterday Ė add saved more room under the cap ó for the return of left wing Chris Kunitz and defenseman Paul Martin by re-assigning centers Dustin Jeffrey and Joe Vitale and defenseman Brian Strait to the AHL.

Kunitz, who has scored 18 goals, has missed the last 10 games with an undisclosed lower-body injury.

Martin, second among team defensemen with 21 points, has missed four consecutive games because of a sore right shoulder and neck.

Today's trade deadline could pass quietly for Pens

Penguins general manager Ray Shero has not ruled out making another move before today's 3 p.m. NHL trade deadline, but his acquisitions last week of wingers Alex Kovalev and James Neal and defenseman Matt Niskanen already have addressed perceived needs.

With more trades this year leading to the deadline than in any season since the 2004-05 lockout, fewer players are available for contending clubs. Fewer clubs are out of contention, too. As of Sunday, 25 of 30 teams were within 10 points of a playoff spot.

Shero said Thursday the Penguins have room under the NHL's $59.4 million salary cap because injured center Evgeni Malkin's $8.7 million prorated salary no longer counts against their cap, given his placement on the long-term injury list.

The Penguins (37-21-6, 80 points) figure to upgrade today even if they don't make a move.

They made room on their roster yesterday -- and saved more room under the cap -- for the return of left wing Chris Kunitz and defenseman Paul Martin by re-assigning centers Dustin Jeffrey and Joe Vitale and defenseman Brian Strait to the AHL.

Kunitz, who has scored 18 goals, has missed the past 10 games with an undisclosed lower-body injury. Martin, second among team defensemen with 21 points, has missed four consecutive games because of a sore right shoulder and neck.

I heard that there is an internet rumor of Talbot being traded. Personally don't see that happening, but ya never know. Guess the next hour+ will tell us if there is anything to it.

Who would want him? No pedigree, no production. Seems like a fun guy. Locker room guy etc. You need those guys. I always wanted to keep him but man its been a while since he was much of a factor in a game.

Well, the team we have now looks to be the team we will carry into the post season, unless some deal through waivers happens at some point. Now, we just need to get some more bodies back between now and mid April.

Thats the way I see it too... or the way it is

Our best additions to the team will be injured players coming back. We could still add sidney crosby !!

It will be like Christmas in Pittsburgh. I still think we can do something in the playoffs regardless but its more like an average team playing really well. Next years team could be serious tho. If we can be healthier and guys like Malkin play to their abilities. Who knows maybe even Kovy will sign a one year.

We can do somethig, I just don't think it'll be enough to go too deep. I definitely dont think we have the depth without Geno to beat the Flyers who added Kris Versteeg themselves in the 2011 Trade deadline, along with boosting their defense with Nick Boynton. That's a very deep team, without crap for goaltending

But we can definitely do some noise in the playoffs, advancing too far is going to be very tough.

We can beat the Flyers without Geno. Without Sid it would take a miracle.

I don't think we can and I';ll tell you why... the Flyers Defense is too good and Jordan Staal is not good enough as a productive line center. We've seen Geno and Sid both get shut down by good defenses. I dont think the Flyers have as good of defensive forwards as we've faced in Detroit, but facing their D alone, Staal will get shut down which cripples that entire line and we don't have him for 3rd line depth/strength and advantage at this point either.

I look at it in terms of matchups. That's one that I don't particularly care much for. We need Geno IMO to beat the Flyers unless we get some off the wall "heart and emotion" type of series win which I'd gladly take. That Flyers team is deeper down the middle than we are now and probably deeper if we have Malkin and Crosby playing since Claude Giroux is better than Staal. kid has 58 points already as the Flyers 3rd Line Center. Staal hasn't seen 50. Malkin and Crosby > Richards and Briere, you eliminate Geno and only advantage there is Crosby. That team is so deep it has it's best goal scorer on their 3rd line (Jeff Carter).

I am always the eternal optimist Beezy, but this is a tough one to really get behind with any confidence
