Unhappy My wife = What is Bipolar 2 Disorder?

Question: What is Bipolar 2 Disorder?
Answer: According to the definition in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV), bipolar II disorder (also known as bipolar 2 disorder or bipolar type 2) is "characterized by one or more major depressive episodes accompanied by at least one hypomanic episode." The key difference between bipolar 1 and bipolar 2 is that bipolar 2 has hypomanic but not manic episodes, meaning the symptoms of mania are generally less severe in type 2. Also, while those with bipolar I disorder may experience additional psychotic symptoms such as delusions and hallucinations, bipolar II by definition cannot have psychotic features. Hypomania can show up as huge sleep changes, irritability, agitation/anxiety, and difficulty concentrating.

The signs which would lead to a diagnosis of bipolar 2 disorder are:

•One or more major depressive episodes
    •At least one hypomanic episode
•There has never been a manic or mixed episode
•Another disorder is not responsible for symptoms
•Symptoms cause distress or impair functioning
Symptoms and characteristics of depression include:

    •Decreased energy
    •Weight loss or gain
    •Despair
    •Irritability
    •Uncontrollable crying
Symptoms and characteristics of hypomania include:

    •Grandiosity
    •Decreased need for sleep
    •Pressured speech
    •Racing thoughts
    •Distractibility
•Tendency to engage in behavior that could have serious consequences, such as spending recklessly or inappropriate sexual encounters
    •Excess energy
It should be noted that the symptoms of hypomania are the same as for mania, but they are less severe. Therefore, the official diagnostic criteria separating a diagnosis of bipolar II from that of bipolar I disorder is that hypomania does not cause marked impairment of functioning or require hospitalization.

She has broken a promise again, she refuses to see a doctor to do anything about meds. Claims she's fine. Actually she is getting worse than ever before. Every day she's a different person. The great gal I love is disappearing. Replaced by a lifeless blob of depression and negativity, or a maniac abusive rage-aholic.

I'm done... done. 18 years of trying to love and care for a crazy woman.

DIVORCE is on. I'm getting the h#ll off this rollercoaster.

And when this is finished I'm going back to working as a small church pastor in a rural setting out here in the Rockies. Already have my references set up and just need to update some paperwork. Life is gonna be better with some peace and stability, instead of this endless drama and chaos. If you are dating or married to a bipolar, run NOW! Save yourself. Don't waste your life and years like I have. Bipolars never get better, only worse with time. I checked the stats and 90% of marriages involving a bipolar spouse end in a divorce. Not even a saint can endure this over time. Please pray for me pals, if you choose or can. Just to keep my cool and get through this.

I will fine, no I'll better when this is finished.

Sucks man but yeah you gotta do what you gotta do. I feel like my wife has some of those symptoms. I have never met one I didn't think was at least a little crazy. I just hope it doesn't get worse!

That's a bummer, man.... I'm sorry for you... I don't wish divorce on my worst enemy, as I know all too well how it feels.

    WY, best wishes to you.

My wife has suffered with depression (and has for nearly 40 years) and I'm relieved that we don't have to contend with that variety. She's been hospitalised twice in the three and a half years we've been married (for some reason her meds stopped working and she told me a couple of months later... silly sausage!) but she does go to her appointments with the pshychiatrist. A big bonus is that the new chap seems to be going back through meds combinations to see what works now. I knew what I was letting myself in for long before I said "I do" - she was very honest about her problems.

It seems I have the other side of the coin, WY - seeing how it could have been makes me thankful. If you ever need to chat, drop me a PM. All our best, sir!

Wow man. Just as you were reconcilling. Are you being hasty in your decision to go back with the divorce? I know this is a huge problem, especially when she won't get help. Has she always been like this or just recently?
My Mother is bipolar and she didn't get help until I was in my twenties. Even though I was a spoiled kid and was loved, my childhood and teen years were filled with the effects of her disorder. A lot of abuse was a result...both physically and psychologically. So, I do understand the ramifications of this disorder from a different standpoint.

I think we all have some bi polar in us.....................you should have seen the people I worked with today! I was sick and half asleep for 16.5 hours, but I observed their traits in pressing situations. A stressed panicker, a ****ed off and I'm leavinger, an I'll start yellinger, a Clark Gable suave that what ever he said was dead nuts wrong. A computer whiz and a project engineer falling apart, and a guy who was just doing his job that caught the ire of some of those people. A good day to be sick. I didn't give a rat's ***. I have always been proud to be a disfunctional guy that could still get it done................almost breakfast club. This crew has changed some of my my views................all over a button that was stuck in the on position.

Well said man. Everyone has their moments. I know I am a little nuts. Probably more depressive than manic. Never turned to anyone for help. You just cant feel sorry for yourself. You just set goals and accomplish some of it at least.

Shure, crazy a bit can be cool, creative and even fun. But it becomes something else altogether sinister when it causes pain and suffering for unwilling participants in Alice's run through wonderland.

Has she ever tried using St. John's wort? Its a Herb used for many types of depression. I have relatives that use it for SAD or seasonal adjustment disorder and a cousin that takes it for what he says is depression but he is very prone the highs as well as lows. He started taking St. John's wort tablets and now he's calm and collected, a different person completely. I sympathize with your situation and hope theres a way to save your marriage.
