Default focus on fundamentals paying off

Pirates' focus on fundamentals paying off

[HIGH-LIGHT]»[/HIGH-LIGHT] Entering Sunday's games, the Pirates led the majors with 15 stolen bases in 18 attempts. After stealing four against the Phillies the day before, they did not attempt to steal in their 5-0 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays, ending a streak of eight games in which they stole at least one base.

[IMGR]http://i53.tinypic.com/16j3qzo.jpg[/IMGR][HIGH-LIGHT]»[/HIGH-LIGHT] Left-hander Joe Beimel (forearm) threw a quick bullpen session yesterday. General manager Neal Huntington said his game readiness will be determined by how many bullpen and live batting practice session he needs, but that he expects him to be ready for Opening Day.

[HIGH-LIGHT]»[/HIGH-LIGHT] Pedro Alvarez was 2 for 3 against the Blue Jays to bring his spring total to 7 for 20 (.350). Second baseman Pedro Ciriaco (1 for 3) and his replacement, Brian Friday (1 for 1) got the only other hits, as the Pirates were blanked for the first time this spring. "We've got work to do offensively," manager Clint Hurdle said. "They've been working extremely hard but, when the game starts, that's when we have to find a way to slow things down and have better discipline at the plate. But that's why we're here at spring training."

[HIGH-LIGHT]»[/HIGH-LIGHT] Right-hander Ross Ohlendorf is slated to start today against Tampa Bay at McKechnie Field. He'll be followed by Evan Meek -- who'll make his first appearance of the spring after battling tightness in his calf -- Jose Veras, Tyler Yates, Mike Crotta and Daniel Moskos.

[HIGH-LIGHT]»[/HIGH-LIGHT] Infielder Gift Ngoepe, a South Africa native who was one of three minor leaguers with the Pirates yesterday, was 0 for 1 in a pinch-hitting appearance, his first.

If they take advantage of all the speed that they have, then they surely will run their way into many more fbi opportunities and multiple run innings. It would really be nice to have the ability to open up a close game rather than trailing by three before the first stolen base attempt is made.
