It wasn't a secret that Troy Polamalu played without his trademark quickness and burst during the Pittsburgh Steelers' run to Super Bowl XLV.

It's now clear why that was the case.

Sources confirmed to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette on Thursday that the six-time Pro Bowl safety never fully recovered from the Achilles' tendon injury he suffered during a Week 14 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals.

Polamalu hurt himself while making the type of impact play that earned him The Associated Press' 2010 NFL Defensive Player of the Year award.

Polamalu injured the Achilles as he approached the end zone to score a touchdown off an interception return. He dove toward the pylon for the TD, but he limped off the field in obvious discomfort. He had entered the game with a calf injury in the same leg, according to the Post-Gazette.

Polamalu, 29, missed subsequent games against the New York Jets and Carolina Panthers before returning for the regular-season finale against the Cleveland Browns. He had an interception on the Browns' first offensive series.

However, Polamalu struggled to play up to his normal standards in the playoffs, failing to make an interception and managing just 10 tackles as Pittsburgh advanced to the Super Bowl but lost. To protect their star asset and perserve him for game days, the Steelers held Polamulu out of practice every day but Fridays.

Fortunately for Polamalu and the Steelers, the safety will not need surgery and is instead receiving treatment and rehabilitating the Achilles in Los Angeles. He's under the care of a orthopedic surgeon who has ties to the Steelers' medical staff.

Trade his achilles tendon for an average but healthy achilles tendon and a lifetime supply of head & shoulders!

The Nuttings are too cheap to resign Troy anyway..............ooooops, wrong forum

Funny thing is, Troy played like **** for Troy but alot better than most other safties. I believe if he would have been 100%, the defense would have been more effective but hey, he gave all he had.

Finally, there is an honest assessment of the situation of the Pirates.

    ****, wrong forum.

Still, we all know Nutting had something to do with his injury.

He was still one of our best DB's in the playoffs. At first I thought it was genius that DL was using him in a different way to help our problems with the pass but there were times that we really needed Troy to be Troy and he just wasn't... Troy so really DL is still a genius for using him that way but only because he was still able to make a way for Troy to help the team even with the injury. The biggest problem with Troy is injuries. He has them way too often but there is no one even close to touching Troy when he is healthy. The guy is a freak even if it's only for 4 games a season lols

Yeah, He paid to have Troy injured he probably thought a second SB title for the Steelers since I took over the Pirates is gonna really make things hard on me

Seriously though, nobody period plays the game like Troy. His injuries are a direct result of his style of play, but the rewards justify the style with which he plays and you can't argue with the results.

70% of Troy is definitely better than 100% of most safties in the NFL. I wonder if that crazy training regiment he goes through kept his achilles injury and others from being more serious then they might have been with traditional training? His training involves a lot of flexibility training along with explosive motion strength building with that Marinovich guy.
