Default Comapring the job of Dayton Moore to NH

Excellent article over at Bucs Dugout by Wilbur Miller.

Neal hasn't been perfect, but he had a far bigger hole to dig out of than Dayton. Plus Dayton's MLB moves have been horrendous.

Yeah - everyone seems to think that KC's farm was stocked by really good trades as well as by drafting. As Wilbur points out that that just ain't so - hell, they didn't even get an especially good return for Greinke.

The Royals are certainly the model for the Pirates, but not because of veteran-for-prospect trades. Their farm system wasn’t built on trades. None of their top ten prospects, and only one of their prospects who rank in Baseball America’s top 100 (Jake Odorizzi at #69), arrived in trades.

Everyone is currently in love with the Royals because of their minor league ranking. Which is clearly a postive. However:

    a) It's primarily as loaded as it is because of how few prospects they've recently graduated. I suspect had the Pirates been in a position of still having McCutchen, Alvarez, Tabata and Walker in the minors, it would compare favorably to the Royals.

    b) As minor league system rankings are nice, it's a means to the end. Ultimately both Moore and Huntington will be judged by the quality of their MLB teams. Just because Moore "appears" to be ahead at this point in the race doesn't make him the winner.

Personally, I think Dayton's MLB trades have been downright horrible.

At least we've gotten Tabata, Ohlie and McD for 'starters'.

Btw, can you just hear the KC "Anti's" over there?

"Moore's been on the job since 2006. When are we going to start winning at the MLB level? That's where it really counts!"

This time last year Moore was getting bashed for taking Eric Hosmer with the 3rd overall pick. He fell out of all of the top 100 prospects lists, etc. This year the same writers try to act like that didn't happen. I can't look it up right now, but I know BA had the Royals system ranked middle of the pack last year and they made this jump without many major additions. They had a sort of perfect storm of breakout seasons last year that no one really anticipated. Wil Myers kept hitting (though he's now moved off catcher), Hosmer and Moustakas both put it together at the same time, and they actually had Danny Duffy come out of retirement and pick up right where he left off. I really don't understand the comparison at all as it's not like this is something they put together through a series of moves last year.

It's sort of the opposite of the way Neil Huntington this year is taking a beating from a few in the fanbase (Lemmings) over our lower ranking of the minors despite the graduation of young hitters during 2010

KC is just the flavor of the month right now. Granted, I don't know very much about their minor league system, but I do remember the fuss that was made over the Pirates during and after the 1997 season. If your major league team finally shows something after years of futility then the minor league system must be kick ***.
