Pirates release Atkins; reassign two pitchers
    Monday, March 21, 2011
    By Colin Dunlap, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

BRADENTON, Fla. -- The Pirates this morning granted an unconditional release to infielder Garrett Atkins, signed by the club as a minor league free agent during the offseason.

Atkins hit .129 (4 for 31) this spring with 11 strikeouts in 17 games.

He spent parts of the past eight seasons in the major leagues, hitting .329 with the Colorado Rockies in 2006.

The Pirates this morning also reassigned two relief pitchers to minor league camp -- the left-handed Justin Thomas and righty Fernando Nieve.

Thomas, who appeared in 12 games for the Pirates last season, and pitched just 4 1/3 innings this spring with a 2.08 ERA.

Nieve was 1-1 with a 5.82 ERA in 7.1 spring innings.

The club now has 41 players in its major league camp.

Unless you count dodging the Garrett Atkins bullet on the 25-man roster. I was getting worried with all the extra attention Hurdle seemed to be giving him.

I think Hurdle (and I can understand) was trying to get Atkins back to where he was a few years back before he nose dived. If Hurdle could do that, Atkins would've been the biggest gem in the offseason. Unfortunately, our luck doesn't work like that and Atkins really looks like a guy whose MLB career is done which has to suck. He went from being a very good above average hitter to a guy that can't even hit fastballs.

Fernando Nieve was also released today. I assume he'll sign somewhere as AAA depth.

    Most likely.

What the rotation for Indianapolis shaping up to look like?

    Rudy Owens is a lock
    Bryan Morris is a lock
Brad Lincoln is a lock and will likely be in Pittsburgh in the first half of the year
Tony Watson is a possibility but he probably moves to the pen
Justin Wilson is a possibility, but could be in Altoona
Donnie Veal will be there, but he won't be ready to start the season
Jeff Locke will be there, but will most likely start in Altoona
Brian Burres if he doesn't somehow end up in the majors
Daniel McCutchen if he doesn't somehow end up in the majors
Mike Crotta unless they decide a full time relief role suits him better

The most likely group to start the season might be Owens, Morris, Lincoln, Burres, and McCutchen. It's possible Crotta starts and McCutchen goes to the pen. There's also a chance they put both in the bullpen and bring Wilson up to start the year. Also a chance they go with 6 starters. I don't think they really need or even have room for another AAAA starter in case of emergency.

Is Owens really a lock for AAA?

I thought he was more in the 'Maybe' to 'Probably' range after getting assigned to AA camp.

I actually left out Sean Gallagher and Cesar Valdez there. I'm starting to confuse myself now. Pretty easy to see why they didn't need Nieve, though.

I was hoping they would have 5 legitimate prospects at AAA but I know it's important to have organizational fillers there like Burress. You don't want to use up an option on a player by calling him up for an emergency start.
