    Default Josh Fields traded

....to Colorado for a PTBNL or cash. More than likely cash.

As noted by Vlad over at BD, this is a good thing. This is how you get decent NRI's to come to your camp.

I believe they're going to try to do the same thing with Marte.

Anythign for Josh Fields has to be seen as a plus, even if it's a bag of sunflower seeds

If they don't make your squad, you make a trade to accommodate them maybe making someone else's.

F'rinstance, Fields wasn't going to get any time in Indy, so they dealt him to a team where he either has a shot at the 25-man, or at least will get some PT in AAA, with a shot at moving up.

It's a courtesy thing, and a kind of handshake-deal kinda thing - a nice thing to do for a guy.
And when you do things like that, word gets around about your org.

According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer the Pirates are currently trying to see if they can find Andy Marte a major league job.

I wouldn't mind holding onto him at least for a little while.

Makes sense to me and with JNN mentioning the bit about Marte it looks like the same thing there. It is a decent thing to do, it's nice to see that Huntington would go out of his way to try and do that. Maybe it works, maybe it doesn't, but the try/attempt is there and like you said, it gets word around, POSITIVE word around about the Pirates which are trying to get every last bit they should or at least should be trying to

A lot of minor league contracts come with an opt out clause, so a lot of the time that's not an issue.

You honestly don’t believe this pablum? There is no courtesy thing involved….if a NRI isn’t going to make the ML club and is going to play behind prospects at AAA….he has no value to a organization except for the obvious. Fields had no place in the organization so management found a team that wanted him, traded him and got something back for an asset.

If the Pirates wanted to be altruistic in these dealings they would just release the player so he could make his own deal and play where he wants to play. This was a business decision…plain and simple. Every team conducts business in this manner NH isn’t breaking new ground here

Believe what you will about the "courtesy" aspect of it, and I'll believe what I have read one more than one occasion over the years.

I didn't say it was altruistic in any way shape or form. Show me where I did. Of COURSE it's business. The Pirates also get a return on a player they weren't going to or didn't want to carry. It's also easier for NH to pick up the phone and make a deal than it is for the player (with or without an agent) to gall 4, 5, 10 teams, looking to catch on somewhere. I also did not say this isn't done by other teams. Of course it is. Again, it's business.

Just pointing out the inaccuracy in your post. Trading a NRI isn’t “a nice thing to do for a guy” it’s a business decision. And by saying “And when you do things like that, word gets around about your org” insinuates that the Pirates will gain a future advantage by doing so…they won’t.
