Default 2010 Pirates around the league

Here's an update on the ex-Pirates who have moved on:

Lastings Milledge - Made the White Sox opening day roster after a strong spring. Looks like they're carrying 14 position players because they couldn't decide between him and Brent Lillibridge

Andy LaRoche - Made the A's 25 man roster after a strong spring. A couple injuries helped open the door, so he might have to prove himself to stick around once everyone's healthy.

Hector Gimenez - Surprise here as it looks like Gimenez (who spent 2010 crushing AA pitching as a 27 year old) will make the Dodgers out of camp. He had a strong spring, but it took an injury to Dioner Navarro to open the door for him. Navarro is expected back sometime in May.

Delwyn Young - Was in the mix until the last day, but failed to make the Phillies. You would think the Phillies would be a tough team to make, but the guys they kept over him are Michael Martinez (a 28 year old Rule 5er, all glove no bat type IF) and Pete Orr (a 32 year old who has 229 major league plate appearances in the last 4 years). They had two spots for those three guys and Delwyn was the guy left out. They also have Wilson Valdez (a 33 year old who can't hit) as their starting 2B to start the year.

Lillibridge...wasn't that the guy we gave up that was supposed to be an all-star by now with the braves?

Yeah. He went to Atlanta with Mike Gonzalez in the Adam LaRoche deal, then a year later went to Chicago in the Javier Vazquez trade. He made BA's top 100 prospects his last year with the Pirates, then never really hit again.

By the way, Lastings is going with a new look this year. Cut all the hair off.

Always liked Lastings...loved what everyone else hated, that he hi-5'd the fans after a game-tying HR...would've been a cult hero if it happened in da burgh..may have to head to the south side to catch him. definitely wish him well.

Yeah it always cracked me up that he villainized in New York for wanting to share the excitement and game with the fans. He'll hit for average or more in Chicago, his power and defense are the question. The potential is there if he unlocks it.

surprised to see Andy Laroche cracked the lineup. He's a good guy, so you hope to see him do well at some point

He'll start the season with Lehigh Valley in the International League. I don't know if he has an opt out later or not.

The Dodgers were planning on carrying 6 outfielders, but Jay Gibbons went down with an injury recently. Now there's talk that it's possible the Dodgers carry 3 catchers so they can use Gimenez as a bat off the bench who pinch hits and plays some corner infield. Crazy.

Again (Just call me Mr Platoon) Lastings will do well if he faces primarily lefties. His OPS was over .900 against lefties last year when Russell decided to use him . He hit too much against righties , managing only a .600 OPS.

Gee, I can still recall the vitriol from the bloggers (not here), when we traded away that footure star, Brent Lillibridge.

I remember, because I was one of them.

I'm dirt-*** broke now myself. Unemployed... and worrying about making it to The Gathering.

Mebbe later on in the season, eh?

I agree. And aside from, you know, actually playing baseball well, he did everything right while he was here in Pittsburgh.
