Default Pirates sign RHP Tim Wood

    MLBTR indicates he has signed...

"Pirates close to signing RHP Tim Wood
THURSDAY, 31 MARCH 2011 11:38 WRITTEN BY COLIN DUNLAP
The Pirates are in the process of finalizing a deal for right-handed pitcher Tim Wood. A reliever recently released by the Washington Nationals, Wood pitched in 26 games for the Marlins last season, throwing 27 2/3 innings with an ERA of 5.53."

Here's the lowdown on Wood from Vlad at BucsDugout:

There is speculation that it is a ML deal and that Olson will be released to make room for him.

Pretty sure this is just a minor league signing.

Agree.....can't imagine it would be a ML deal.

The club also designated minor league pitcher Ramon Aguero for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster for pitcher Jose Veras

How close is Moskos being added to the pen? I know he's been in a closer's role after an attempt at starter, but couldn't he work his way up to the closer? After all, he is a southpaw.

When you lose 105 games at the ML level, doesn't seem that learning down there or up here should be a big difference.

Wood did indeed sign a minor league deal. The community voices can now take a breath.

was it really an attempt at making him a starter? lotsa closers do minor league stints starting...

either way...I've got a spot in my heart for moskos...all the bad vibes from not taking the catcher...kid's just doin all he can do, doesn't deserve any animosity from us for doing his job...

So Garrett Olsen is gone now? Not too sure about this one because of his prior arm problems.

I'm with you on hoping Moskos does well. He can't help he was drafted where he was.

It's different with a Ryan Leaf kind of pick, all-hype, #1 pick who struggles. But, Moskos wasn't praised as being a franchise savior, yet I think he may try to live up to being a #4 pick.

No. As PFV indicated, Wood signed a minor league deal.

Aguero was claimed on waivers by the Rangers. Good arm, but not a huge loss. 26 years old and the numbers have never been that impressive. There's always a chance those guys turn it around, but it doesn't seem particularly likely. Velocity was reportedly down significantly in camp this year as well.

Good move by the Rangers....he's worth a shot. Aguero has/had a good arm but he didn't look like the same pitcher this spring.

Aguero was added to the 40MR due the lack of pitching prospects in the upper minors and because of the potential in his big arm but he has either been hurt or ineffective. With several pitchers now filtering up through the system he was getting pushed aside.

I am betting that Moskos is up before mid season, if not sooner.
