    Default Pirate Platoons

With the Bucs planning to run a traditional platoon with Jones and Diaz it got me thinking. When is the last time the Pirates have really done this?

I know they've had the right-handed bench guy who might occasionally spell a regular against tough lefties or vice versa, but I can't think of a real platoon being run since the LaValliere/Slaught split in the Jim Leyland days.

    Who am I missing?

Thinkin' you're correct...Leyland was the only manager I can remember using all-out platoons...don't forget Merced/Redus/Bream...

I believe NH Hutting has said it won't be a strict L/R platoon.

True, but I think it will be a lot closer than anything else in recent memory. We'll see how it plays out. Hurdle has run fairly traditional OF platoons in the past (Hawpe/Moore, Smith/Spillborghs).

Wally Backman/Jeff King. Not sure if that was really a traditional platoon as much as it was Backman backing up King.

I think it's more like everyone will contribute. I do not see any real platoons. Diaz and Jones will be the closest thing.

If Overbay struggles badly to hit Lefties, I think we might (hope that we do) possibly see it but I think that they believe (as any manager/management does) that Overbay can return to hitting lefties well... which he did prior to 2008 and for the majority of his career.

...as for the rest of the thread, So much of the 1990's Pirates are a blur, I swear we had some platoons going then as well but naturally only the Leyland ones stick out to me that everyone else mentioned

I don't believe there's ever a platoon that is a strict lefty/righty split platoon. If a player is hitting really well, a coach will ride them despite the splits and.. if the manager is doing homework or Huntington and is people are doing homework on the analysis side, they will play guys based on pitcher matchups than splits. Jones or Diaz might hit a certain pitcher really well even if it's a lefty for Jones or righty for Diaz
