Default Crosby Not Expected To Be Ready To Play For The Start Of The Playoffs

Pens not optimistic Crosby will play in playoff opener

UNIONDALE, N.Y. -- Though he continues to participate in non-contact practices with the Penguins, superstar center Sidney Crosby is short on time regarding a return for the start of the Stanley Cup playoffs next week.

After a morning practice today, Penguins coach Dan Bylsma reiterated that there is no timetable for Crosby's return.

"He has a couple more steps to go in his rehabilitation before he can even think about returning to play," Bylsma said. "I don't know how fast that's going to happen. I don't know if that's going to happen.

"Considering he has a couple more steps to go through it seems like anything in the immediate future is out of the question."

Crosby hasn't played since Jan. 5 while recovering from a concussion, and the Penguins are 21-13-5 without him heading into a game tonight against the New York Islanders at Nassau Coliseum.

The Stanley Cup playoffs open Wednesday, though the Penguins' opponent and date for Game 1 remains to be determined.

Crosby, still the team leader with 32 goals and 66 points, was cleared for non-contact practices March 29. He must be cleared by doctors for full practices then full contact and remain symptom free after those steps before he can play.

He returned to the ice March 14 after not engaging in much strenuous activity since his concussion diagnosis Jan. 6.

Crosby, per team policy with injured players, was not available for comment after the practice today.

    There's a shocker!

Sounds like Sid's practicing for next season. After all, he is a hockey player and if he is healthy enough to practice... he should!

They didn't really say that the are doubtful Sid would miss round one, they are sort of putting 2 and 2 together. They Pens are very tight lipped about Sid. It keeps Tampa Bay guessing for one. I have come to just accept the team as is without Sid and will only believe Sid is back when I see him on the ice in a game.

Byslma is just trying to temper expectations IMO.

Yeah, I'd guess he's closer that we think, at least I hope so.

The first couple of games will determine Sid's timetable. If we're down 3-2, he plays. Series tied at 3, he plays.

I think you're right about this.

This type of thinking is why they're handling it like they are. When he's ready, he'll play. IMO. If they're down 3-2 and he's ready he'll play. If he's not he won't.

They said during the news or whatever last night (not the newscaster but I wanna say it was a quote for Ray Shero or Dan Bylsma) that they don't expect Sid to play in the first round of the Playoffs. That he has too much to do in catching up yet to be ready.

I really at this point am not anticipating seeing Sidney Crosby on the ice in the Playoffs unless we maybe reach the Conference Finals. At which point we'll likely need more depth to go any further (could argue this for the first 2 rounds actually)

What was it I heard that Geno said he "was ready to play," since he only needed MCL and not ACL work, too??

Is that just EM's wishful thinking?

I'm not sure he was ready to play before he got hurt. I don't see us missing him nearly as much as Sid. But without Sid, he'd sure be a help.

Wishful thinking. He's done for the year. He hasn't even touched the ice to skate, let along skate and practice like Sid has been doing both of all month and nobody is even sure if he'll play and IMO a first concussion is easier to come abck from in a shorter time frame than an ACL/MCL tear especially skating.
