Probably not a good sign for Ohlendorf. He hasn't pitched well in either one of his starts and now he is having discomfort in his shoulder. Who comes up to take the spot for Ross while he is on the DL? Do the Buccos go with Karsten in the rotation and bring up a reliever or do they bring up a guy like Lincoln to take the spot in the rotation? Is Lincoln still on the DL? What are the opinions here?

I wonder if the shoulder has been bothering him all spring? He had a shoulder injury last year all spring and into the start of the season that shelved him for a nice part of the season. Last year it was blamed on him coming into Spring Training out of shape because of his USDA internship. This year supposedly he came into camp in great shape, working up his arm strength and everything all offseason.

    Just curious.....

I think Karstens has found his niche and does a wonderful job. Let's promote someone if it comes to that.

Why not Bryan Morris. He seems to be ready and would be a reward for performance and his turnaround of attitude from a couple of years ago.

I would like to see a starter called up as well, as long as it's not Daniel McCutchen! I agree that Karsten should stay where he is, he's actually pretty decent in that role.

Pirates' Ohlendorf says pain in 'similar area' to past injury
    Saturday, April 09, 2011
    By Colin Dunlap, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Peter Diana/Post-GazettePirates pitcher Ross Ohlendorf adjust his hat after giving up a three-run homerun to the Rockies' Jason Giambi during Friday's game at PNC Park.Pirates pitcher Ross Ohlendorf, who left Friday (into Saturday's) 14-inning game with shoulder soreness said the pain is in a "similar area" to the soreness that forced him to shut down last season on Aug. 23 and sent him to the 60-day disabled list.

"I felt it on one pitch and I threw a couple more and it was still there," Ohlendorf said of what happened against the Rockies on Friday in the top of the third. "So, I just felt like I needed to come out."

In regards to the area in which the pain is, Ohlendorf said there is a definite similarity.

"It is very close," Ohlendorf said. "I don't know if it is the exact same, but it is a similar area. I don't think it is as bad, though."

Ohlendorf, as he was leaving the ballpark after the 14-inning game, said it was too early to predict if he'd make his next schedule start, on Thursday. He also said that an MRI is not scheduled as of yet, but that he will be re-evaluate on Saturday when he arrives back at PNC Park and a plan of action will be mapped out by the medical staff then.

Also, right-handed reliever Evan Meek wasn't used in the 14-inning game because of tightness in his right shoulder. The injury isn't thought to be serious

Brian Burres would get the nod.

Advancing to next week, Ohlendorf's next start is scheduled for Thursday against the Milwaukee Brewers in the final game of the homestand.

If he can't pitch, the staff's swingman, Karstens, almost certainly will get the start.

    Here is why:

    • Karstens is stretched out, innings-wise, to where he can throw enough pitches to start, and go deep into, a game. The stretching-out process for Karstens began in the latter-half of spring training.

    • There is a day off for the club on Monday, building in an extra day of rest for Karstens, who came in, in emergency duty, to pitch 3 1/3 when Ohlendorf went down on Friday. He didn't give up a run and struck out five.

    • Karstens has proven he can take the ball to begin games; 50 of his 92 major league appearances have been starts.

    • There are no viable options in Class AAA right now healthy enough to make a spot start for the big club.

It would probably be Karstens until Scott Olson is ready to return. In order to bring up Burress, the most likely candidate, a spot would have to be cleared on the 40 man. Same goes with Gallagher who looked absolutely awful last night.

Is Scott Olson stretched out? He was in the early competition to become a starter.

Just hate to mess up what has become a real plus in the bullpen, with Karstens' present position.
