    Default 2012 Pirates Contract Issues

    Tim Dierkes has a snapshot of 2012 contract issues. The link is below;

So looking over that list here is what is clear: if the Pirates prospects take a step forward as expected then the following players will not be on our team next season:

    -Maholm--replaced by Owens
-Doumit--bench spot possibly taken by Matt Hague
-Cedeno--at 3M he doesn't have a chance to be picked up. D'Arnaud or a free agent or both
    -Olsen-- gone
-Snyder--i think he could be extended at a cheaper price IF Sanchez isn't seen as likely to be ready
-Overbay--i think if he continues to play well that he'll find his way back next year for another year until maybe Rendon is ready (if we draft him like we should).

Realistically the Pirates should have the funds to add a pitcher and the SS we really need going forward.

Boy is Bob Nutting gonna make a heckuva profit in 2012. He must be salivating.

Lord knows he is not 'in it to win it'.

I am not a member of the FO but I wouldn't care what some fans think. The plan is working in the minors just let it work.

As of this moment, I would rather keep Doumit than Snyder. I know most disagree, but he stands as a better value to the team.

Since both are as fragile as they are, I would play both about evenly. We'll need both to get through the season.

I wouldn't want either for their price tags. I think Snyder is the better player...and thus if we discuss an extension with one of them at a lower price I'd want Snyder. Likewise, I would prefer Sanchez learn from Snyder than Doumit.

You are aware that both players have contract options for next year?

Nobody ias going to excersie those options.

so one of 3 things will; happen with these players ..
    • they'll get a multi year extension
    • they'll get traded
    • they'll be allowed to walk

If I had to make a choice between Doumit and Snyder for 1 year based on either players options and not wanting them for 2 or more years I'll take Snyder who is cheaper by a million.

Maholm, Cedeno and Olsen are all going to be based on how they perform this eyar. Olsen could get squeezed out by a cheaper alternative from AAA ready to make the leap to the big leagues, which is ideally what you try to do. Replace price with similar or better players of far better value. Save money spent on the bullpen and apply it to the big ticket players.

Maholm is still young so he could get an extension but that is going to e based on how he pitches this year. The irony is that if he pitches decently this year, he'll likely earn close to what his option price is. In which case, is Paul Maholm worth that price to the Pirates over a multi-year extension??

Cedeno unless he becomes everything envisioned instead of someone with a potential set that management likes, he's gone.

I personally don't really see any "issues" to be honest.

What one has to do is set a cap when figuring out players. Some of us figure out salaries and a bunch of money related things with the NHL and it's the same concept. It's a puzzle but you have to fit everything short term and long term into the puzzle. Right now, I would set Pirates max payroll around $55-60, probably $60 as an annual "cap" that only will increase as we see revenue increases, which will only come as this team plays better and attracts more crowds...

If I'm not mistaken, Doumit's option is for two years, you either pick up both or neither. Sign me up for neither.

In that case, yeah they aren't touching Doumit. No way they extend him to eat those or pay the option(s)

This is why they "might" exercise Snyder's option. There is no way Doumit is coming back. Sanchez probably won't be ready to start in 2012. They are going to need a catcher and if Snyder plays well and stays injury free when he comes back there is a possibility he could return.
