Macho Man Randy Savage Dies In Car Accident
    by TMZ Staff
    May 20,2011

Macho Man Randy Savage -- one of the greatest wrestlers of all-time -- died today in a car accident in Tampa, Florida ... TMZ has learned.

TMZ spoke with Randy's brother, Lanny Poffo, who tells us the wrestling legend suffered a heart attack while he was behind the wheel around 9:25 AM ... and lost control of his vehicle.

Earlier this month, Savage celebrated his 1-year anniversary with his new wife Lynn.

    Savage was 58.

Macho Man began wrestling in the WWF in 1985 and became a superstar with his trademark catchphrase "Ooooooh Yeaahhhhh."

UPDATE: Florida Highway Patrol tells TMZ ... Savage was driving his 2009 Jeep Wrangler when he veered across a concrete median ... through oncoming traffic ... and "collided head-on with a tree."

Savage was transported to Largo Medical center, where he died from his injuries.

Savage's wife was a passenger in the vehicle during the collision -- but survived with "minor injuries." She was transported to a different local hospital where she was treated.

According to officials, Randy and Lynn were both wearing their seatbelts at the time of the accident.

Cops say alcohol was NOT a factor.

An investigation into the accident is underway.

Ah, man. With all the wrestler's from my youth who died I thought I was kind of over it at this point, but this one upset me. The Macho Man was always the best.

I actually found out about this on Baseball Reference. They have his minor league stats up on the blog: http://www.baseball-reference.com/blog/archives/11160

I guess he was a wrestler from '85-'93 or something like that?.....

... His last season at Tampa (in the stats from your link)... That was the Reds minor league system... They actually had this as the top sports story here in Cincy today on the 4pm news....

Yeah, 85-93 was kind of the peak of his career, but he was around a lot longer than that. I think he started in some small companies right after his baseball career, then he was around into the 2000s.

A little fact that I heard today was that he actually started as a catcher with the Cardinals, but his right shoulder was destroyed so badly that he couldn't throw anymore. Instead of retiring he just learned to throw left handed and moved to 1B. I'm always amazed by that kind of thing.

Yeah, he was one of my favorites when I was a kid. I never knew he played minor league baseball. That's a shame. Only married a year to his current wife too. Remember Miss Elizabeth his "manager"? I wonder where she is at these days?.......nevermind, just read that she died years ago. She was only 42. Wow.
