Adams, Power hang on in wild road victory

By Keith Whitmire, FOR THE TRIBUNE-REVIEW
    Sunday, May 29, 2011

DALLAS Power defensive back Royce Adams went from goat to goat and, finally, to hero in a wild finish to a 76-75 win over the Dallas Vigilantes.

Adams was beaten by Vigilantes receiver DeAndrew Rubin for a 22-yard touchdown with 10 seconds left to trim the Power's lead to one, pending the PAT.

When Dallas boldly went for a two-point conversion and the lead, Dan Raudabaugh's pass into the end zone fell incomplete, but Adams was flagged for pass interference.

On the Vigilantes' second two-point attempt, Adams had perfect coverage on Rubin, the intended receiver, to preserve the Power's lead.

"You've got to turn the page," Adams said. "You've got to forget about it and just go out there and make a play."

Even then, the Power couldn't breathe easy. The Vigilantes recovered an onside kick and drove to the Power 17-yard line with one second left.

However, Remy Hamilton's 32-yard field goal attempt sailed wide right and the Power (6-4) could finally celebrate their third win in a row.

"We're still trying to catch our breath," Power coach Chris Siegfried said. "That was just a shootout."

The Power shattered their previous scoring high of 58 points set in the second game of the season while handing the Vigilantes (6-5) their first loss of the season at American Airlines Center.

"Sometimes, you've got to win them ugly," Siegfried said. "This was one of those games that you win ugly as far as defense. We've been used to playing ugly ball on offense."

There was nothing ugly about Power quarterback Bernard Morris throwing seven touchdown passes with no interceptions while rushing for another score. Receiver Mike Washington caught four touchdowns and ran for one.

Joshua Rue scored on a 3-yard carry, his second touchdown of the game, to put the Power ahead for good with 27 seconds left.

The Power trailed by two scores, 34-20, late in the second quarter after fumbling away a kickoff in the end zone.

The Vigilantes almost carried that two-score lead into halftime, but Rubin fumbled trying to stretch the ball across the goal line on the final play of the third quarter.

The Power defense came up big early in the second half by getting a stop on the Vigilantes' first drive. Then linebacker Anthony DeGrate recovered a fumble that allowed the Power to take the lead.

"The momentum switched our way," Siegfried said. "They had an opportunity to go up three scores, and our defense stepped up and played huge in the middle of the game."

I listened to most of the game and really like the poise this team is showing. It sucks they don't come to Chicago this season.

I watched it on NIFTY last night. They've sure won some nail biters this season. The previous 2 games, I'd have to say that their defense won it for them. Last night, the defense was getting burned left and right, but luckily the offense matched them score for score. The defense did stop them on a key 2 point conversion attempt that kept them from grabbing the lead.

Tied for first place now with Cleveland and they come in here next Saturday. Nice to be watching some meaningful games this time of year, even if it is arena football!
