Power climb into first place in East Division

    By Jerry DiPaola, PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW
    Sunday, June 5, 2011

No one accused Power defensive back Carlos Campbell of sneaking into the Cleveland Gladiators' huddle and stealing the play call, but Power coach Chris Siegfried couldn't be sure.

Campbell's interception in the end zone with 58 seconds left punctuated a strong defensive effort Saturday night and led the Power to a 35-32 victory at Consol Energy Center. The victory gave the Power sole ownership of first place in the American Conference's East Division.

The Power (7-4) lost two fumbles, including one by Mike Washington in the fourth quarter that put extra pressure on the defense. But they survived to extend their winning streak to four games. They have won five of their past six games with a total margin of victory of 27 points.

The Gladiators (6-5) helped out: Kicker Matt Denny missed three extra points and a field-goal attempt.

The Power were clinging to a three-point lead when Campbell, who played for the Gladiators last season, moved from the middle of the secondary toward the sideline and picked off the pass from Kurt Rocco.

"It looked like Carlos ran the route for the receiver," Siegfried said.

The game, which featured no scoring in the fourth quarter, was almost the opposite of last week's scoring bonanza, when the Power defeated Dallas, 76-75.

"Carlos struggled last week, I think," Siegfried said. "But he played a great game (yesterday) and got back to where he needs to be."

The Power stopped the Gladiators four times including three consecutive possessions in the second half. The Power haven't lost in the four games since quarterback Bernard Morris (sore arm) returned from the injured reserve list.

There was nothing wrong with Morris' arm last night. He was 17 of 23 for 210 yards and three touchdowns, including two to receiver Jason Willis.

The decisive score and final points of the game was an 18-yard pass to Lonnell Dewalt with 3:46 left in the third quarter. The Power also scored on running plays of 2 yards by fullback Josh Rue his 11th touchdown of the season and 1 yard by offensive lineman Mike Lucian, who lined up in the backfield.

The Power ensured the victory when Morris scrambled 44 yards to the Cleveland 2 on the possession after Campbell's interception. That let the Power run out the clock.

Siegfried was pleased to claim first place, but he didn't expect his team to relax. Five of its final seven regular-season games are on the road.

"It is going to be really easy to stay focused this week because of the way we played offensively," he said. "We had plenty of opportunities to pull away from these guys."

The noisy crowd of 9,066 included Steelers receiver Hines Ward and was bolstered by 2,000 airhorns given to fans as they entered the arena.

updating the Power stuff the other day I was suprirsed even though i've followed the games and scores and such that they are 7-4. It's a great winning streak. I remember the Pittsburgh Gladiators in their first season being pretty **** good themselves

Woohoo! The Shock handed the Power another gift tonight. Albeit a small one. Amazing what getting a few guys off IR can do for a team.
