    Mets-Pirates Preview
    STATS LLC

It's been 19 years since the Pittsburgh Pirates had a nine-game winner at this point in a season. It's been just as long since they finished the season with a winning record.

Kevin Correia is giving them hope of ending both droughts.

Correia looks to gain a share of the major-league wins lead and get the Pirates back to .500 on Sunday as they continue their four-game series against the visiting New York Mets.

The Pirates (31-32) have finished with a losing record each season since winning the NL East in 1992, but are among baseball's pleasant surprises thus far in 2011.

The success of Correia (8-4, 3.64 ERA) is another major surprise.

The right-hander, who won 10 games with San Diego last year, is now part of a six-way tie for second in the majors in wins, one behind reigning NL Cy Young winner Roy Halladay. Boston's Jon Lester also gets a chance for his ninth win Sunday.

No Pittsburgh pitcher has had nine wins through 64 team games since Randy Tomlin did it, also in 1992.

"Obviously, it's nice I'm getting a lot of wins," said Correia, who is 3-0 in his last four outings. "But as long as we're winning the game, that's my job."

Correia didn't pitch his best Tuesday and didn't get a decision, allowing four runs and eight hits in five innings, but the Pirates pulled out an 8-5 victory over Arizona.

He was much better six days earlier, holding the Mets (31-33) to two runs in six innings of a 9-3 win at New York.

Another victory would give Pittsburgh a .500 record or better through 64 games for the first time since the team was 34-30 in 1999.

The Pirates beat New York 3-2 on Saturday, one night after dropping the series opener 8-1.

"The one thing that I really feel good about is that these guys have grasped the idea of pitch and play defense," manager Clint Hurdle said. "Find ways to score on offense, but pitch and play defense. It makes for a good game."

The Mets, meanwhile, have won five of seven but fell short Saturday in their own bid to reach the break-even mark.

"That's not a goal, to get to .500," manager Terry Collins said. "Our goal is to win and win and win and to get above .500 -- that's our goal. We keep looking at the .500 mark; if we play good baseball, we'll get there and beyond. But it can't be, 'Let's just get to .500,' because that's not where you really want to be."

Collins turn to Chris Capuano (4-6, 4.86), who is looking to win consecutive starts for the first time since a four-game run April 8-27, 2007.

The left-hander turned in one of his best performances of the season Tuesday, allowing one run with five strikeouts in six innings of a 2-1 win at Milwaukee.

Six days before facing the Brewers, Capuano surrendered five runs and eight hits in six innings while losing to Correia. He has followed each of his wins with a loss, compiling a bloated 9.37 ERA and serving up six total homers in those three outings.

Mets outfielder Jason Bay snapped an 0-for-24 slump Saturday by going 1 for 4 in his first game at Pittsburgh since the Pirates dealt him to Boston in 2008. He's 0 for 6 with three strikeouts against Correia.

    Harrison out with oblique injury
    June 12th, 2011

Josh Harrison’s six-game hitting streak is on hold with the third baseman out of the lineup today with minor tightness in his right oblique.

Harrison said it happened in the seventh inning of Saturday night’s game.

“The infield single I hit, the throw was off-line a little bit and I just jerked away to avoid the tag and felt a little something,” he said. “But it should be fine, just taking some precautions and getting some treatment on it today.”

Harrison said he’s been specifically told not to swing the bat or throw today. He admits it’s frustrating, given the success he’s had since joining the Pirates in New York two weeks ago, but doesn’t believe he’ll be out long.

Harrison is hitting .300 in 10 games with the Pirates, and has hit safely in nine of his 10 starts.

    New York vs. Pittsburgh
New York Mets (31-33) at Pittsburgh Pirates (31-32), 1:35 p.m.

(Sports Network) - Surprise early-season standout Kevin Correia can get the Pittsburgh Pirates back to .500 today when they host the New York Mets in game three of a four-game set at PNC Park.

The Mets entered Saturday's game with a chance to get back to .500, but were denied when Andrew McCutchen stroked a two-run double and James McDonald tossed six innings in the Pirates' 3-2 win.

McDonald (4-4) gave up two runs, eight hits and three walks for the Pirates, who rebounded from an 8-1 loss in the opener and are 7-4 in their last 11 contests. Jose Tabata is riding a five-game hitting streak.

R.A. Dickey (3-7) went the distance for New York, allowing three runs on eight hits over eight frames. Jose Reyes had two hits and leads the majors with 32 multi-hit games this season. He has reached base safely in 52 of his 61 games this season and leads the majors with a .341 average, 91 hits and 11 triples.

The Mets lost for just the third time in their last nine games.

New York is fourth in the National League's East Division and 7 1/2 games behind the first-place Philadelphia Phillies, while the Pirates are fourth in the NL Central and 5 1/2 back of first-place St. Louis.

Correia, who entered the season with a 36-43 record in the big leagues, was 5-4 after a 9-6 loss at Milwaukee on May 15, but has since bounced back with a four-start unbeaten run.

He won consecutive decisions over Detroit, the Chicago Cubs and the Mets through June 1, then pitched five innings in the Pirates' 8-5 win against Arizona in his last start on June 7.

Against New York, the 30-year-old Californian allowed six hits and two runs across six innings in upping his career mark against the Mets to 2-3 in 11 games -- five starts.

Pittsburgh is 9-5 in the 14 games he's pitched.

For New York, 32-year-old lefty Chris Capuano continues his comeback with his 14th appearance of the season and 12th start.

The Massachusetts native was an 18-game winner with the Milwaukee Brewers in 2005, then won 11 and five games the following two years before not pitching at all in the big leagues in 2008 and 2009.

He returned to make 24 appearances with the Brewers in 2010, then signed with the Mets as a free agent on Jan. 3, 2011.

Capuano took the loss in the June 1 matchup with Correia and the Pirates after allowing eight hits and five runs in six innings. He rebounded for a 2-1 win at Milwaukee on June 7, giving up just six hits and a run in six innings. Mets starters have posted a 2.70 ERA over their last 16 games -- the lowest in the majors over that period.

The Mets and Pirates split a four-game set in Flushing, N.Y. from May 30-June 2, but New York is 10-4 in the last 14 meetings overall.
