Default Pitt/Penn State game to return in 2016.

Pitt, Penn State to renew football rivalry in 2016
    Tuesday, June 14, 2011

Penn State's Lavar Arrington (11) blocks a field goal try from Pittsburgh's Nick Lotz, right, in the final minute of the fourth quarter of a 1999 game in State College.

Pitt and Penn State announced today that the schools will resume their football series with an agreement to play two games in 2016 and 2017. The Panthers will play host to the Lions on Sept. 10, 2016 and the game at Penn State will be played on Sept. 16, 2017.

Penn State holds a 50-42-4 advantage in the all-time series that began in 1893. The schools played every season from 1900-31 and 1935-92. Following a four-year break, the series resumed for four games from 1997-2000 before its current hiatus. The rivalry gained national stature during the 1970s and '80s when the teams regularly met with both eastern supremacy and national title implications at stake.

Pitt and Penn State last played on September 16, 2000, when the Panthers beat the Lions, 12-0, at Three Rivers Stadium.

"This is an exciting day for college football fans," Pitt athletic director Steve Pederson said in a statement. "The tremendous history of this rivalry is well documented and the passion that fans have for this game is enormous. We are very pleased that this two-game series is now in place and a new generation of fans can experience the excitement of a Pitt-Penn State football game beginning in 2016."

... Hopefully it is extended much longer, but this is a start....

It's a great rivalry that has been on hold for way too long......

    I agree.

And being that its 5 years away I highly doubt JoePa will be around to see it. My understanding is that he has been the main person keeping this game from happing the last number of years.

From my understanding, it's only happening at all because the Penn State AD said they happen to have a couple of open dates those seasons. I listened to his interview on the fan and he seemed to make it out like he doesn't want to renew the rivalry and is only playing Pitt those two seasons because those openings came up. He made a public statement before this interview making it sound like he wanted to renew the rivalry. He sounded completely different in the interview to me. Who knows what will happen. Five years is a long time away so anything can happen. At least it's a start anyway.

Not sure how true this is, but I understand that it is Penn State Athletic Department that has really kept the rivalry from occuring based solely on economics. Penn State apparently would have renewed the game earlier, but they wanted two home games at PSU to one home game at Heinz. PSU can hold 100k+ while Heinz can hold 60k+. Knowing that this rivalry will be a big draw, I can see why PSU wanted the 2 home games, and I can also see why Pitt told them to go pound sand.

In regards to JoePA having his hands involved, I'm not too sure. I understand having the whole OSU and Michigan rivalries and the rest of the Big 10 games they have to have on the schedule, but I'm really not sure how much JoePA has to do with the overall schedule vs the AD having the last say so. If it's the AD, then I can see the economics coming into play. Plus you need the cupcake games to schedule in there also.

You want a rivalry, then switch venues every year.

Joe Paterno will still be coaching, I bet.

It is true, like Geo said.....Penn State packs 107,000 in the stadium even if Temple is playin there
Pitt can hardly draw 50,000......So YES it is economics....HELLO, EVERYTHING is economics these days and I can see why Penn State always wanted more home games in the series....AND Pitt benefits dollar wise too from that arrangement.........

How does Pitt benefit? I assume all gate fees collected are kept by the home team/university and the visiting team doesn't get anything related to money at all.

Ugh!..... I don't know for sure this is the case, but I sorta doubt it.... It has more to do with Paterno having his panties in a bunch from years past and the whole "Big East" thing with all teams in, and old folks don't forget, and HE gets his wish whatever it might be..... But I honestly don't know.... The rivalry will sell-out wherever it is, and will be a huge game.....

... Let's wait and see how the details fall-out, because they will......
