    Default Not Since 1992

I haven't enjoyed watching a Pirate's team this much since 1992. I'm really enjoying watching this group come together and play competitive baseball. The effort is there, and you can actually see this team's strong desire to become a winner. I've been watching night after night, and enjoying what I'm seeing.

Just imagine if the hitting ever gets going. I know our lineup isn't great, but, I do think they have actually under-achieved, and the Pirates are still at .500 The dream scenario would be to have Pedro come back and hit like he did last year, get healthy at catcher, and have the rest of the lineup provide more consistent help to Cutch/Walker/Tabata.

The big story has obviously been pitching. I have never seen such a dramatic turnaround in pitching success. Our starters have been going out there night after night and turning in phenomenal performances. The bullpen has been doing their job for the most part, and Hanrahan has been downright nasty. Major credit goes to Hurdle and Searage for this turnaround, as it is essentially a lot of the same pitching staff. I'm actually blown away by how quickly they have made a difference.

Keep it up Buccos. You have me truly enjoying watching Pirates baseball in Mid-June, and I'm starting to become optimistic during games, instead of waiting for the bottom to fall out, as I did during the previous 17 years.

    Let's Go Bucs !!!!!

Well said post, but what I enjoyed most is that someone has a screen name 'Menudo'.

1997 was pretty good. We actually traded for veteran SS Shawon Dunston to strengthen our lineup for the pennant race. Imagine that!

In terms of W-L and entertainment, I think this team could be comparable.

I was given that as my fraternity pledge name back in college because they said I looked like I belonged in that band.

I like your screen name as well: "Vandelay Industries....Kale Varnsen speaking"

Kramer to phone: "What Delay Industries ?"
George from bathroom: "Say Vandelay Industries, say Vandelay Industries"
Kramer to phone: "Your way off buddy. Yeah, no problem"
Jerry looking at George laying on the floor with pants around ankles: "....and you want to be my latex salesman"

Best show in the history of television.

Being a former pitcher I enjoy the pitching this year, tremendously. The hitting, however, is horrible.

I believe August of '99 was the last time the Buccos were above .500 this late into the season...

Yea, it's been pretty entertaining so far this season.... I have to admit that since the strike I haven't really been too into baseball. But thanks to Kip, last season I jumped back into it, and have been even more into it this season...

Yes, "TTK," I bought the MLB package on DTV and have enjoyed many evenings when I just would have been reading or casino gambling (they opened "Hollywood" in West Virginia, 62 miles from my door which is about a 55 minute drive).

In recognition of Kip, I am building a statue to him in my lawn. It's beanstalk size now, but in a few weeks......

It has been awesome to follow this team and watch them fight for wins. Imagine in 4 weeks if they are 5-6 games above .500 as the Steelers go about training camp. The Steelers just might find themselves competing with these Buccos for headlines. That would be amazing.

I completely agree. It will be a great thing for your average yinzer fan to stop *****in' about the Pirates trading their best players and instead actually being interested in the games and standings. The problem now is fairweather fans.

Walker had three RBIs, Xavier Paul hit his first home run, and the Pirates defeated the Houston Astros, 7-3, at Minute Maid Park to push their record above .500 (34-33) at the latest point in the season since 1999.

On Aug. 15, 1999, the Pirates were 59-58, thanks to a 2-0 win against the Astros with Todd Ritchie on the mound. The Pirates have now won four of their past five games and secured a series victory against the Astros, their 13th of the season.

That's got to be close to the total number of series wins last year.
