    Default Maholm question

If the Pirates keep him all year and then do not pick up his option do they get compensation?

I think it depends on what type of free agent he is classified as, but don't quote me on that.

    I'm quoting you!

Like steel said, it depends if he's classified as an A or B type, and they also have to offer him arbitration.

Players are ranked as A or B free agents based on the past two seasons. Maholm's 2010 was pretty bad, so it seems somewhat unlikely that he would qualify. The categories for starters are games (relief appearances count as 1/2 point), innings, wins, W-L %, ERA, and strikeouts. Games and innings are really the only two categories where he's likely to have good numbers over the two year stretch.

If his ERA stays where it is and the fact that he is an inning eating leftie, he may be tagged an A.

Is he worth a 3 yr extension, or do we think we have too many arms coming up to need him being around? If we think he's got it together then having the innings-eating lefty with a veteran presence and great attitude would be great to have around. The question is, would he stay here for say 3 and 24-27mil? The next question would be are we ok with paying a #3 that kinda money with our payroll (even though that's a pretty middle of the road price for a #3 starter elsewhere)?

There's the kicker! Everyone is taking it for granted that he would renegotiate. My bet is that his agent is looking at the bigger payday!

Ok, so has anyone changed their minds on Maholm? Let's face it, a left-handed pitch with an ERA a **** hair over 3.00 and healthy and pitching the no of innings that he does, regardless of his record, is a huge commodity. Honestly, I see no reason why they don't offer him a contract extension and try to reduce that option year from the almost $10 mil that he now has. It may even be 3yrs + before we see all these young pitchers we've drafted. Even then, he still might be an attractive part of the lineup.

Just thinking out loud here, but ****, he's been pretty impressive this year.

POLITICIANS AND DIAPERS SHOULD BE CHANGED OFTEN AND FOR THE SAME REASON!

I say keep him & pay him. No guarantee we have anyone as good in the minors. Make those youngsters blow you away to get the callup.

I agree, if nothing else, pick up the option and see what happens.

i would definitely try and sign him for 3 more years, the only thing that he has changed from last year is that he now pitches inside to batters which made him more effective, and thats something he can take with him year to year, its not like they changed his delivery and there is danger of him reverting back. He is never hurt, he never has arm fatigue, he is exactly the kind of horse you need on a staff, pay him.

After today's game Maholm's ERA is 2.96. His trade value is at it's highest point but his value to the Pirates is also at its highest level.

You will see in the next two months that he's the best we have. Personally, I still think he's a solid 3, but that's where we are. As for those "arms...coming up," they are a long, long way down there, with a whole minefield of Tommy John surgeries, inning counts, and "tinkering" from an endless stream of pitching coaches to be navigated. I say sign him if we can.

I say sign him. He eats innings for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. He's throwing inside finally, and he's doing it very effectively. A lefty in the middle of your rotation is always something a team wants. If he turns out to be this good the rest of the year, I would say that it's safe to say he has turned the corner and is going to be a quality starter for years to come. I would rather have those years be in Pittsburgh than somewhere else, especially somewhere else in the division.

    sometimes it's that simple.
