    Default 2009 Pumpkin harvest...

(Guess this is a good a place as any to post this.)

I had sent out orders to family members a few days ago to pick up some halloween and sugar pumpkins in anticipation of my arrival. I want to be sure I get to make my homemade pies for Thanksgiving as well as some other things in between.

Anyway, they asked me how much I expected they would all cost, but couldnīt say for sure as I canīt find a report on the harvest for this year. Last year, there was a problem with a fungus killing off a ton of the plants and prices skyrocketed. But I havenīt found any report on this years harvest and/or fungal problems. Anyone know anything? Specifically for the great lakes or mid-atlantic region?

Something that typically interests me anyway.

I can tell you that last year the pumpkin selection around here SUCKED... so far from what I've seen, the pumpkins look more solid and larger in size

The Biggest Gourds You'll See Today....
Those things must be 15 pounds each. Sure are a lot of pumpkins around.

....Well, I guess I should be setting a better example and act more "upstanding", but I honestly can't tell you about the harvest at all.... Most of 'em in my neighborhood end-up looking like this:

I'm pretty sure you can get sweetened punkin' guts in a can for pies, cookies, etc... Probably not as good as fresh, but at least it might take a bit of the "gay" out of it!

I wish halloween was a bigger deal here. It looks like so much fun. My life isn't complete without a spewing pumpkin.

Actually, that canned pumpkin is everything but. Tons of different kinds of winter squash in that crap. That stuff is considered to be "pumpkin" so they can get away with writing 100% pure pumpkin on the label.

    **** Libbyīs.
