Default Pirates option Ciriaco, expected to call up Presley

Pirates option Ciriaco, expected to call up Presley
    Monday, June 27, 2011
    By Bill Brink, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
The Pirates are expected to recall outfielder Alex Presley from Class AAA Indianapolis in time for Tuesday's game against the Toronto Blue Jays. They optioned infielder Pedro Ciriaco to Indianapolis today.

Presley could see playing time as the designated hitter in Toronto, or in the outfield due to Jose Tabata's injury in Sunday's 4-2 loss to the Boston Red Sox.

Tabata was diagnosed with a strained left quad and his status is uncertain at this time. He has not yet been placed on the disabled list.

Tabata pulled up after running out a bunt single in the first inning of Sunday's game. He fell to the ground past first base, causing Pirates trainers and manager Clint Hurdle to examine him for several minutes. They placed him on a stretcher and carted him off the field.

Tabata limped out of the clubhouse after the game, and Hurdle said after the game he didn't have specific information on Tabata's condition.

Presley was pulled from Indianapolis' lineup Sunday afternoon. He was hitting .336 with a .500 slugging percentage in Indianapolis with eight home runs and 36 RBIs. In 19 games with the Pirates in 2010, he hit .261.

"He continues to get better, he continues to understand what he can do as a hitter, what his strengths are in the batter's box, on the bases, defensively," general manager Neal Huntington said of Presley before Sunday's game. "He obviously had a tremendous first half of the year down there in Triple-A and has forced his way up here and we'll see where we go big picture. He's certainly earned every opportunity he's going to get up here."

Tabata was hitting .265 before his injury.

Indications were that the Pirates planned to recall Presley soon anyway so he could serve as the designated hitter when the Pirates traveled to Toronto for a three-game series. The Pirates optioned Josh Harrison to Indianapolis and called Chase d'Arnaud Thursday, which Huntington said was the first in a series of moves over the next two weeks.

d'Arnaud and Pressely might be better options for helping now, then what they can get on the trade market. I will assume they are here with management hopes of them sticking permanently. If they both hit, the offense is gonna be alot better for it and have quite a bit of speed.

Tabata diagnosed with left quad strain
Outfielder has not been put on DL; Bucs to recall Presley

printe-mailPITTSBURGH -- The Pirates announced Monday that outfielder Jose Tabata has been diagnosed with a left quad strain, which Tabata suffered legging out an infield single during the first inning of Sunday's 4-2 loss to the Red Sox.

Tabata's status is uncertain, the team stated in a release, though the Pirates have opted not to put Tabata on the disabled list at this time. While the club could get by one position player short for a few days, Tabata would likely go on the DL if he is going to be sidelined much past the team's upcoming three-game series in Toronto.

In addition, the Pirates confirmed that outfielder Alex Presley is scheduled to join the club in Toronto on Tuesday. Recalling Presley from Triple-A will give the Pirates an additional outfielder, as well as a bat to plug into the designated hitter spot. Through Sunday, Presley led the International League with 98 hits in 75 games

Just playing the devil's advocate here, but what if Pressley really plays well? Does Starling Marte get a chance and what if he performs well? Does that make Tabata tradeable? As a corner OF, he doesn't project much power either, but may be attractive in a package to try and get a legitimate player at 1B.

What a delightful problem to have for a change. I would say that we have plenty of room in right field to give a couple of guys a shot, you know Cutch is a lock at center, but either corner outfield position is up for grabs. I love what tabata brings to the clubhouse, his enthusiasm and effort, and speed but he needs to turn the bat on or make room for someone who can. Aside from Cutch and Hanrahan, no one should feel secure at their position,

I would say that RBI machine Walker is safe in his spot as well.

I hope Tabata gets well soon!

That the Buccos are bringing up new players, while they still have a winning record, is very exciting. Look at the new faces that have contributed, so far!
