The Penguins will speak with Jaromir Jagr's agent about a contract this afternoon.

Petr Svoboda, Jagr's agent, confirmed that he is set to have a meeting with Penguins general manager Ray Shero today.

"We are meeting this afternoon to talk about a deal," Svoboda said. "Hopefully by tomorrow, we will know something."

Earlier today, the Penguins signed Pascal Dupuis to a two-year, $3 million deal. They have just under $7 million left under the salary cap for the upcoming season.
The Penguins appear to be targeting Jagr, Tyler Kennedy and Mike Rupp as players they would like to sign.

I am disturbed by the delay for two reasons.

The first is that some other team may be dangling more incentives, although I can't believe that Jagr would do this just based on money.

I think the Pens look bad and its a disservice to the fans to let this issue hang like an old time "cowboy serial."

I think it's Jagr who looks bad and how is this a disservice to the fans? The Pens aren't obligated to negotiate in the press and quite frankly it's a horrible idea. Quite honestly I blame the whole thing on the agent who's trying to use public opinion to put pressure on the Pens.

POLITICIANS AND DIAPERS SHOULD BE CHANGED OFTEN AND FOR THE SAME REASON!

You think the agent is twisting the Pens' "arm?"

Is there a better RW out there whom they can sign for a $2 Mil cap hit and who offers more to the Pens?

My reading of this board and fan comments in the PG and Trib suggest that most Pens fans want the guy signed. (Check out this thread's poster.)

It takes two to "diddle" and I think the Pens have played a role in building fan expectations, if Jagr doesn't sign.

Score 30 goals and the connection will be fine.

Let's pretend that Jagr has already committed to the Pens. He can't sign the contract until July 1. There may be a strategic advantage for Shero to keep this news under his hat. He may have other FA's on the line that he doesn't want pursuing other suitors because they fear the Pens have no cap room left. ... possibly TFK and Rupp?

According to the PG Rupp is gone:

Although the Penguins might be able to hold on to Kennedy, left winger Mike Rupp won't be returning. His physical style was an asset on the fourth line the past two seasons, and he chipped in nine goals and eight assists in 81 games in 2010-11, when he was paid $850,000.

The Penguins re-signed winger Arron Asham on Wednesday after it became clear that they wouldn't be able to reach an agreement with Rupp.

The Pittsburgh Penguins withdrew their one-year, $2 million contract offer to free agent Jaromir Jagr Friday morning.

"We made what we thought was a very fair contract offer to Jaromir on Tuesday, based on his stated interest of returning to the Penguins," said Ray Shero, the team's executive vice president and general manager. "We made our best offer from the start, given our salary cap structure, in an attempt to facilitate a deal. But now, after several days, with an extended time frame for making a decision, and additional teams getting involved, we have decided to move in a different direction. It was never our intention to get involved in a free agent bidding war, and we have to focus on our team.

"Jaromir is one of the greatest players in Penguins history, and we wish him all the best."

Well, we can all stop caring about it now. Ray just withdrew his offer to Jagr. I had a feeling this would happen. They wanted a decision by midnight Wednesday and Jagr and his agent are still screwing around trying to start a bidding war with everybody. Ray was not going to be part of that. Jagr will play someplace else it looks like.

Great move by Ray. Sometimes the best moves you make, are the ones you don't make, at all
