Default For all the complaining about Ronny Cedeno...

There seems to be some perception among Pirates fans that Neil Walker has been extremely valuable 2B while Ronny Cedeno is a worthless SS. Walker's extremely hot April turned some heads, and I feel like people don't quite appreciate how bad he's been since then. Since May 1:

    Walker: .220/.295/.346 (.640)
    Cedeno: .277/.346/.380 (.725)

Even adding in Walker's big April and Cedeno's awful April you end up with these lines for the full season:

    Walker: .248/.320/.381 (.701)
    Cedeno: .251/.309/.343 (.653)

Looking at the various player value stats for the full season:

Fangraphs WAR: Walker 1.0, Cedeno 1.0
Baseball Reference WAR: Walker 1.2, Cedeno 1.7
Baseball Prospectus WARP: Walker 0.9, Cedeno 1.6

At those sites Cedeno actually ranks tied for 4th (Fangraphs), 2nd (BR), and 2nd (BP) among the team's position players.

I think people really overstate what a problem Cedeno is on this team.

    Agree

He's improved in two big ways this year: 1.) his fielding is better--he is consistently very good; 2.)quality AB's--he works the count as well as anyone on the team, something he did not do last year.

I'll grant that Cedeno's playing better, but your comparison reflects more on how poorly Walker has been performing, especially at bat with men on.

He, too--along with Cutch and Overbay--should try swinging at all of those first pitch strikes down the middle that he ignores.

I said the same thing in a thread a day or so ago.

Ronny stays at SS. As an aside, I don't understand how people complain so much (on the talk radio etc) about him. He's a great glove SS this year hitting .246 (only .005 behind Walker). I'm perfectly ok with him as long as he hits about .240 He's our 8 hitter for cripes sake.
He's now at a BA of .251 (ranked 20th out of 30 MLB SS's) and an OPS of .653 (18th).

Add into the pot his well above average fielding, and yes he does have a few gaffes, but all players do, and you have an above average player.

Cedeno isn't great, but he really is very low on our list of problems.

Maybe those Cedeno haters would rather have a POS like Yunel Escobar who seems to irritate every team he plays on.

I have discovered the source of Walker's struggles! Walker joined Twitter after the game on May 8. Before that game he was hitting .295/.368/.442. Since that game he's hitting .212/.283/.333. It's the curse of Twitter!
