    Default Latin American signings 2011

The Pirates landed their first big one today, Colombian OF Harold Ramirez. This will be the team's big Latin American signing for 2011, as they weren't really in on any other top names. No suspense with this one, as they got the deal done right on July 2, the start of the signing period. Bonus is reportedly $1.05 million.

Ramirez is 5'11", 175 pounds, hits from the right side, and speed seems to be his best tool. I'll post more info when I do some more digging.

Here's BA's quick write up on Ramirez:

A 16-year-old from Cartagena, Ramirez has wide shoulders but is thick and short-legged, not the long, projectable frame of many young Latin American players. Still, he shows speed, feel for hitting and baseball instincts beyond what many young Colombians typically show. Ramirez has some explosiveness with plus-plus speed, which he showed by stealing home twice in a series of exhibition games against Mexican League teams in March. He has strong hands at the plate and a feel for hitting. Ramirez has played in the Dominican International League and played in MLB’s new league, El Torneo Supremo, going a combined 2-for-5 with a walk and two stolen bases in May in the El Torneo Supremo all-star game and against Canada’s junior national team. If he maintains his speed, he has a chance to be a quality defensive center fielder with a fringe-average arm.

Ben Badler also noted a few days back that the next biggest name the Pirates are linked to is a Venezuelan CF named Elvis Escobar, who will likely get a 6 figure bonus. He's 5'9", 165, and comes from a huge baseball family. His dad is Jose Escobar who played in a few MLB games, his cousins include Alcides Escobar of the Royals and Kelvim Escobar, formerly of the Blue Jays and Angels. His brother Edwin is pitching in A ball with the Giants, and another cousin (Vicente Campos) is a flamethrowing pitcher in Seattle's lower levels.

My only question if these two make the "big team," is what do we do when "Elvis leaves the stadium??"

    From Rene Gayo:

Rene Gayo, the Pirates' Director of Latin American scouting, had high praise for outfielder Harold Ramirez, tweets Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. "He's a real exciting player. Plays like Willie Mays," said Gayo. Earlier today, the Bucs signed Ramirez for $1.05MM.

As long as they don't play like hound dogs we'll be okay!

That Elvis Escobar signing is official now as well. $570,000. Ramirez is the second biggest Latin American signing bonus in Pirates history, and Escobar ends up in the top 5 as well.
