    Default Great win, but......

Lost in all the Radar Mckenry hoopla (perhaps rightly so) is the fact that yet another baserunner was doubled off of 2nd on a fly ball to left field. Now it was X Paul.

What is going on? Aren't we 'transmitting' the number of outs?

That could've easily cost us the game and I was rehashing it as we were down 4-3 with 2 outs in the 8th.

That was a bone head play for sure. Those are the type of things the Pirates will have to eliminate if they are serious about contending.

C'mon, I didn't see the play so I don't know the circumstances that caused it. Was it a ball that appeared to be a base hit at first and the OF'er made a great play? I suspect that's what happened. Nevertheless, that will happen to any team. Let's start enjoying the glass is half full thing instead of the glass is half empty. That was a GREAT win by this team and it simply proves, to me at least, that there is no I on this team. It is a total effort from all 25 players.

I'm no doubt enjoying the season, but trust me it was a bad play. X-Paul was on second with one out after being sacrificed to second. I forget who hit the ball to left, but Paul didn't look,he just put his head down and ran. The Pirate announcers said he no question lost track of the outs.

The bigger issue is that this just happened to Garrett Jones just a coupla games ago. That's why I brought this X Paul instance up.

Is it the 3b coach's fault?

I don't think it's solely the base coach's fault, but they should take some blame if they're not (and we don't know for sure if they are or not) reminding the players of the situations.

I think the bulk of the blame goes onto the players. Everywhere you look in a ballpark can see how many outs there are. They should know better.

Werent we told this offseason and didn't most of us or all of us say that we should expect to see a lot of outs and such on the bases due to a more aggressive base running approach?

Probably all this was. Believe it or not, I feel as if we aren't aggressive enough base running. We hit into too many DP's and too many of those IMO involve faster base runners at 1B not attempting to take 2nd before that happens. We have so much speed that we could be screwing with the heads of pitchers and such who are so concerned with base runners. We rank 14th on all of MLB in stolen bases and just 7th in the NL. We should be better than that

Agreed. I was actually perplexed why Ciaraco wasn't trying to get to 2nd base after he pinch-ran for Diaz. Being down 1 run, he had to get into scoring position, ESPECIALLY after Cutch FO for the 1st out.

I love being aggressive on the basepaths, especially taking an extra base when you can.

But there's a difference between being aggressive and being stupid, like Paul was when he went on contact from second with 1 out. He didn't even pick up the ball, he just ran with his head down on contact. He should've went halfway. Even if the ball drops in, worst case scenario is he's standing on 3rd with one out waiting to be knocked in by a sac fly or possible groundout (depending on D alignment)

after isaw Ray's explanation of what happened, i agree that it was just stupidity on Paul's side and going back to an earlier question asked about whether its the player or coach, I'd say it's 50/50. %0% player since this is **** he should know how to do since Little League. Running bases isn't some3thing that changes through the ranks of baseball or with different skill levels.. 50% coaches because its their job to make sure the players are focused, aware, reminded, schooled, refreshed and all of those other things.

Actually 50/50 is steep. I'd go more 70-30% where its the players fault

i saw that we hit into 2 or 3 DP's in yesterdays game and they all involved faster players. Presley got out and Walker (who had to have had either Jones, Cutch, D'Arnaud or PResley on base). We hit into the 9th most DP's in the league (2nd most in the NL) and personally i feel that a good number of those is because we aren't doing enough hit and runs and steal attempts

I hear that, last year at this time the Pirates were something like 25 games under .500 and praying that this season would be better. I think XP was just trying to make a more dramatic game for the fans to appreciate and to keep 'em coming back for more Let's go Bucs!!!
