Default Pirates division foe making moves already....

The Brewers pen just got a lot better.....

    http://pittsburgh.pirates.mlb.com/ne...s_mlb&c_id=mlb

Rodriguez, 29, holds the single-season saves record (62 for the Angels in 2008) and was 23-for-26 for the Mets with a 3.16 ERA in the first half of 2011. He has 291 career saves to Axford's 48.

Rodriguez's current contract includes a $17.5 million option for 2012 that vests if the right-hander finishes 55 games, and he's already finished 34 games this year for the Mets. If he falls short of that total, the Brewers can buy out the option for $3.5 million.

It was not immediately clear how much cash was involved in Tuesday's trade. It was a significant enough amount that the Commissioner's Office signed off on the deal, Melvin said.

The Mets will choose their players to be named from a list of five Brewers Minor Leaguers by a date in September

I now hope he finishes enough games to vest his 17.5 million dollar option. Maybe Axford blows out his elbow or something!!

Apparently the Reds are interested in acquiring Ubaldo Jimenez.....

    http://www.cbssports.com/mcc/blogs/e...97882/30592959

If the Cincinnati Reds hang around in the NL Central race, having an ace would be a huge boost. In fact, it might be what puts them over the top. Ubaldo Jimenez of the Rockies might qualify as an ace, and he's reportedly on the Reds' radar. According to Fox Sports, the Reds are interested in Jimenez and could offer a package that might entice the Rockies -- which would include multiple young pitchers in return. Homer Bailey, Mike Leake and Travis Wood were specifically mentioned in the report.

Now, let us realize how many stipulations are in play. The Reds need to decide they're going to push for a move and the Rockies have to be satisfied in giving up Jimenez. He hasn't had a great year, but his potential is huge and he still isn't paid like a true ace (he's only making $2.8 million this season), which obviously makes him an attractive buy -- yet it also means there's no big reason for the Rockies to deal him. Basically, this feels like a longshot, but it's worth noting that the Reds are at least watching with a keen eye.

Jimenez, 27, is 4-8 with a 4.14 ERA and 1.30 WHIP this season, but last season he was a stud. He finished third in Cy Young voting and started the All-Star Game. He ended up 19-8 with a 2.88 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 214 strikeouts.

I think the Reds stand little chance of landing Jimenez. He's cheap and controllable for the next 3 or 4 years. It will take a serious haul to pry him away. Tim Dierkes over at MLB Trade Rumors seems to think several teams, including the Pirates could top any offer from the Reds.

Personally, I'm not that concerned with going out and getting an upgrade. Sure there are guys that would be nice to add. But at the end of the day, they aren't going to add high impact pieces, so I don't see any reason to add. Let the kids play. I'd like to see a young corner infielder added and that's about it.

At the minimum I would like to see us bolster the bullpen. Minimum.

Couldn't agree more. I know there'll be a faction that says NH and BN are being cheap if they don't add significantly, but I don't know where you do that at this point in a definitive fashion.

It doesn't make sense for us to rent a $15 mil player for half a season..we won't re-sign them, and we're not THAT close to where it'd make sense.

Short of a huge impact player, I think we're better off standing pat and letting the kids play and seeing who floats to the top.

What do you define as close or not close? Do you have a chrystal ball? Right now we are one game out of the division lead.

The division is not the prize. They have stated numerous times, building a championship caliber team is the goal. You can't do that by dismantling the minor leagues now. We aren't winning this division until they get past being the Brewers *****es!

I don't think you need to trade away your top prospects to get better.

Absolutely. Notice the comment made by Brian Wilson after the AS game on Hanrahan and this team. The players see this team and are IMHO the best judges on our talent. They know we're coming.

"He's arguably the best closer in the game," Wilson said of Hanrahan. "I think they've got a special team over there, and I hope people know that. There's a lot of young talent. Their starters are doing well, and they're handing the ball to him."

Perhaps some of our best 'trades' will be the guys we get back from the DL?

Beimel - Vet presence in the 'pen
Meek - If he is healthy there's another arm to trot out there.
Doumit - Altho I love what Radar McFort has done behind the plate, Doumits' offense will help.
Tabata - I am not a fan of X Paul or Overbay and putting Tabby in RF (or Alex) and moving G Jones to 1b solves both of those problems. Diaz is a better PH than Paul.
Cedeno - Send d'Arnaud back to AAA for more ABs and to work on his throwing? I like Wood (power) and JHay (speed/singles) off the bench.

The wild card beyond all this is my fave whipping boy, Alvarez. If he gets his act together in AAA and, as Hurdle suggests, 'aims for LCF in his ABs', then we have our Power source.

I feel confident in our starting pitching....I really do. Lincoln looks like he can become a '6th starter' to give our guys some rest. if needed

    Am I looking at a glass half-full?

The Pirates will make a deal or two and one of the deals will be to land....a starting pitcher. Mark it down.
