Default The Return of the Injured Sea Rovers

Figured I would start a thread we could all update with injury update news and news on how the rehab assignments are going.....

    07-14-2011

Ross Oehlendorf - 4 scoreless innings pitched for the advanced class A Bradenton Marauders. He gave up only 2 hits, walked zero, and struck out 3. Not a bad start to getting back on track.

Jose Tabata - Played in the same game with Ross for his second rehab start. Wednesday Jose was 0-2, and was also 0-2 in this game. So far in two rehab starts he is 0-4 with two walks and two strikeouts.

Pedro Alvarez - If Pedro plans on being the big bat addition we all crave at the deadline he has some work to do. In Thursdays game for the Indy Indians Pedro was 0-4 with three strikeouts and one walk. Rough.

Steve Pearce - In Thursdays game, also playing with the Indy Indians, Pearce went 1-5 with a HR and struck out twice.

    Pedro went 1-3 with a walk and a K.
Pearce went 2-5 with his second HR.
Tabata experienced a tight quad Thursday & is to be evaluated Saturday.

Pedro was the DH this game vs. Columbus & was 1-4 with 2 more K's. He is currently hitting .235 @ AAA.

Pearce started this game @ 3B & went 2-4 with a 2B and is hitting around .350 @ AAA. In a very odd situation Jordy Mercer apparently jacked a HR then got beamed his next at bat injuring him. Pearce then slid over to play SS & apparently did pretty well, starting a double play & all. I would expect Pearce back pretty soon which is probably going to burn Pedro pretty bad. Pearce has proven he is ready though and Pedro has struggled just as hard @ AAA as he did for the Buccos.

I would expect Pearce to take Josh Harrison's place and give the Pirates a right handed bat for first against lefties.

Wonder what the deal is with Ronny. He was placed on the 7 day DL on July 2nd with a concussion & is still out.

He's supposed to start a rehab soon. The thing about concussions is they created a 7 day dl for them, but concussions have their own timetable on healing. Remember, last year both Morneau and Bay had concussions that cost them the better part of the season.

To be totally untechinical, what I see just eyeballing Pedro is a guy who is stiff and uncomfortable-looking at the plate. I think he's got to drastically revise his approach to hitting down at AAA, and wait for a September call-up.

To be honest I would see no reason to bring him up if he is still struggling as bad as he is. He would be worthless. The only thing that sets him apart from a Josh Harrison is his ability to hit homers. If he isn't doing that I will take Harrison or Pearce.

I agree, although he also brings the threat of a home run presence. Personally, I'd like to see Wood get more at bats.

    Pirates' Cedeno begins rehab assignment
    Sunday, July 17, 2011
    By Paul Zeise, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Pirates shortstop Ronny Cedeno (7-day DL, concussion) will begin his rehab assignment in Indianapolis today.

Cedeno was injured on July 1st against Washington when he tried to break up a double play.

Manager Clint Hurdle said this morning that if Cedeno progresses as expected, he could return to the Pirates by the weekend series against St. Louis.

Hurdle said the same time line could be in place for IF/OF Steve Pearce (strained calf) if he continues to progress, who is in Indianapolis as well.

I hope they bring Pearce up soon and give him Overbay's AB's or some of Harrisons. I think he can help them. If he doesn't cut it, then they need to aquire a 1B.
