Mendenhall To Sue Over Lost Endorsement Deal

    July 18, 2011 2:28 PM

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Pittsburgh Steelers running back Rashard Mendenhall isn’t happy with losing an endorsement deal.

KDKA-TV’s Ken Rice has learned that Mendenhall will sue Champion Athletic’s parent company, Hanesbrands, for ending his endorsement deal.

Champion cut ties with Mendenhall because of his controversial tweets that questioned the celebration of Osama bin Laden’s death in May.

On his official Twitter page, Mendenhall posted:

“What kind of person celebrates death? It’s amazing how people hate a man they never even heard speak. We’ve only heard one side.”

“I’m not convinced he was even behind the attacks. We have really seen no evidence to prove it other than the government telling us.”

At the time of the termination, Champion released a statement, saying in part:

“While we respect Mr. Mendenhall’s right to express sincere thoughts regarding potentially controversial topics, we no longer believe that Mr. Mendenhall can appropriately represent Champion and we have notified Mr. Mendenhall that we are ending our business relationship.”

A day after the controversial tweets, Mendenhall posted a blog explaining what he was trying to say.

In it, Mendenhall said he does not support Osama bin Laden and is not against the United States.

He has some balls. there's no way he gets this endorsement back. Next time... choose your words a little better if you are worried about losing endorsements and ****ing people off?

I agree that people have the right to say what they feel....1st Amendment and all, but Rashard, you must also realize that Champion reserves the right to choose who represents their company and brand. They are protecting their image.

He can sue all he wants. I guarantee champion had a "Dont embarrass us!!" clause in his contract. He broke it. Now hes left with only he misguided views. Instead of Rashard taking it as a lesson learned, he will now lose even more money fighting a legal battle hes not going to win. Not smart.

While they may not agree with what he had to say, he wasn't out there stringing dogs up like other scumbags who are currently getting paid millions through endorsements from hypocrites. I'm not going to say Champion is wrong, because they have their own policy on who represents their brand, but the backlash of what Mendenhall said is absurd. He's not a criminal. He just picked a poor time to express what he was thinking. He's not the only person in America who thinks people dancing in the streets over a bullet in someone's head is messed up.
