Former Pitt QB Stull paces Power in finale

    Saturday, July 23, 2011

Former Pitt player Bill Stull became the fifth quarterback to start and win a game for the Pittsburgh Power this season, throwing six touchdown passes Friday night in a 61-48 victory against the Philadelphia Soul at Wells Fargo Arena.

The victory put the Power at 9-9 to complete their expansion season. The team was eliminated from the Arena Football League playoff race last week, and Friday night's win was only its second in its final seven games.

Stull directed an offense that committed no turnovers a week after regular starter Bernard Morris lost three fumbles in a 67-55 loss at Cleveland.

Power coach Chris Siegfried signed Stull last week as insurance for Morris. With an eye toward next season, Siegfried named Stull the starter for the finale and used Morris at receiver. Morris, who will play quarterback if he returns next season, caught four passes for 37 yards and an important fourth-quarter touchdown.

Stull, a Seton-La Salle High School graduate, completed 24 of 40 passes for 260 yards and no interceptions. He joined Morris, Chris Wallace, Kevin McCabe and Anthony Morelli as winning quarterbacks for the Power this season.

Receiver Mike Washington (Aliquippa) caught 11 passes for 155 yards and four touchdowns to finish his rookie indoor season with 114 for 1,367 and 30. Cornerback Josh Lay, who also played at Aliquippa, intercepted a pass, his fourth of the season to share the team lead with linebacker Lonnell Dewalt.

The Soul, which defeated the Power in overtime four months ago at Consol Energy Center in the first game of the season, finished 6-12.

I hope Stull can get that starting job next season. Too many turnovers from Morris killed the Power this year.
