Default Pirates made hard push for Beltran, but he wouldn’t come

http://blog.triblive.com/dejan-kovac...e-for-pirates/Pirates made hard push for Beltran, but he wouldn’t come
July 27th, 2011 Outfielder Carlos Beltran refused to waive his no-trade clause to come to the Pirates, according to a team source, when the Pirates were among several teams pursuing him from the New York Mets.

The Mets are close to a deal to send Beltran to the San Francisco Giants.

The Pirates made an aggressive push to get Beltran, who might have been their top trade target, even though Beltran would have cost $6.5 million the rest of the season. The Pirates and Cleveland Indians both were willing to pick up all of that money. In the deal with the Giants, the Mets will be picking up $4 million of that cost.

Beltran, who had a full no-trade clause, eventually gave the Mets a list of seven teams to whom he could be traded. The Pirates were not among them.

“This decision for Carlos is about the select group of teams where he feels he has a great chance to win,” agent Scott Boras told ESPN. “That’s what this thing is about.”

Going to the Giants appears to have been worked out a while ago. Pirates were willing to pick up the entire $6.5 mill in their offer while the mets are paying $4mill?

How good was the young pitcher the Giants threw in and to whom would he compare in our farm system?

he was their top-rated pitching prospect, #3 overall in their system.

The Mets said all along they'd rather pay more of Beltran's salary than take a lesser prospect.

Ironic, I'm guessing for the first time in 18 years we decided we'd rather take on more salary in lieu of giving up a better prospect.

Seems as though Beltran refused to come here anyway, so the point is moot.

According to either Jim Colony or Paul Alexander, can't remember which said it....someone in the Bucs front office told him the pitcher from SF was equal to Heredia.

yeah not sure of Wheeler has the future upside of Heredia but it's close. High strike out guy drafted out of HS, with future ACE ceiling. 1st Round pick, was in a mix that included the Pirates at one time during that draft.

Just a ridiculous price for a rental. there's no way in hell I'd consider that.

Dave Littlefield is offended that you forgot about him picking up all of Matt Morris' remaining $20 million on his contract instead of trading Andrew McCutchen

Curious Kip...if you thought Beltran was THE piece that would put us in the running for a world championship, you wouldn't think about giving up Heredia, Tallion, or Allie?

I didn't think that really counted as a trade?

oh hell no. I wouldn't make that trade at all.

IT's really all moot anyways since it didn't seem like we had a chance at all regardless of the offer since we weren't a team Beltran wanted to goto. I doubt the Mets really entertained our offer that much.

But no, Beltran would've had to come cheap. He's a very old rental. and cheap he didn't goto the Giants, thats for sure. The Mets really made out IMO
