Hmmm. When I first heard, the thing that most intrigued me was the number of home runs he's hit. 324! He also has a .281 CBA. Not too shabby.

Who would've thought you'd hear it said on tv "Lee goes from a downtrodden Orioles team to a playoff contender in The Pirates". That made my day right there.

I don't mind this because we didn't give up very much at all, and we finally have someone to replace Lyle Overbay. I don't think it moves us into contenders for the division, so I'm not sure I understand the move much. Mayber they're not done yet.

Pirates acquire first baseman Lee from Orioles
    Sunday, July 31, 2011
    By Bill Brink, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Rob Carr/Getty ImagesFirst baseman Derrek Lee hit 12 home runs and 48 RBIs with the Orioles this season.PHILADELPHIA -- The Pirates acquired first baseman Derrek Lee from the Baltimore Orioles late Saturday night in exchange for Class A first baseman Aaron Baker.

The Pirates moved Ryan Doumit to the 60-day disabled list to make room for Lee on the 40-man roster and said they would announce a 25-man roster move when Lee reported to the team.

"We are pleased to add a quality veteran player like Derrek Lee to our ballclub," general manager Neal Huntington said in a statement. "He is an experienced, productive right-handed hitter and solid defender who should add to our team on the field and in the clubhouse."

The Baltimore Sun reported that the Orioles would send Lee and cash to the Pirates.

Lee, 35, was hitting .248 with a .306 on-base percentage and 12 home runss, but has hit .297 with three homers and nine RBIs in his past 10 games.

He has a one-year, $7.25 million contract and is owed about $2.6 million for the rest of the season. In the past two weeks, he hit .366 and since hitting .220 in May, he hit .268 in June and .261 in July. Eight of his 12 home runs have come since June 1.

Lee left the first game of the Orioles' doubleheader against the New York Yankees in the eighth inning and did not play in the second game.

Earlier Saturday, the Orioles traded reliever Koji Uehara to the Texas Rangers for first baseman Chris Davis, along with pitcher Tommy Hunter, so they could do without Lee, who signed with the Orioles as a free agent in January.

Lee hit .306 with 35 home runs with the Chicago Cubs in 2009, but his production dropped the next year, which he split between the Cubs and the Atlanta Braves.

Doumit, who fractured his left ankle in a collision at home plate, was eligible to come off the DL July 29.

The trade could spell the end of Lyle Overbay's tenure at first base.

The Pirates signed Overbay as a free agent to a one-year, $5 million contract in the offseason, but Overbay, a career .270 hitter who hit .243 in 2010, has hit .228 with seven home runs this season and has a .301 on-base percentage.

The Pirates drafted Baker, 23, in the 11th round in 2009. He played the entire game for Bradenton Saturday, and reports that the trade was nearing completion did not come until late in the evening.

In three seasons in the minors, he has worked his way from State College to West Virginia to Bradenton and shown some power at the latter two levels. He was hitting .285 this season with 15 home runs.

"I went to bed [Friday] night and I was still getting emails," manager Clint Hurdle said. "You wake up in the morning, and there's more."

After dropping a7-4 decision against the Phillies Saturday night, the third-place Pirates were 3 1/2 games back of National League Central Division leader Milwaukee and still a buyer instead of deadline seller for the first time in a long time.

"We are diligently working through the process," general manager Neal Huntington had said Saturday afternoon.

The Pirates rank in the bottom quarter of the National League in runs, on-base plus slugging percentage (OPS) and home runs, magnifying the need for a power hitter who can drive in runs.

They reportedly also have expressed interest in Minnesota's Jason Kubel, but Twins general manager Bill Smith told the Minneapolis Star-Tribune he believes his team can be a contender in the American League Central.

Kubel, 29, was hitting .307 with six home runs and 38 RBIs before Saturday but missed time because of a sprained foot. He has a $5.25 million salary and will be a free agent after the season.

The Pirates had interest in Oakland outfielder Josh Willingham, but the negotiations between the two teams dissipated Saturday, according to ESPN.

In addition to major leaguers, the Pirates have looked at every Class AAA roster and most Class AA rosters to find players who may be blocked or overlooked, Hurdle said.

I like this move if they designate Overbay.

Would it be wise for the Pirates to be pro-active here & solidify 1B for next season with a known commodity & attempt to sign Lee up for next season before this one ends and he is on the open market?

To evaluate the trade, it's 2 simple questions:

    1. Is it an upgrade?

    The clear answer is yes.

    2. Did we give up too much?

No, we gave up a guy not even in our top 30.

Add that up and it's a win. No it's not a grand slam, but it's a win.

    Clear cut and quite simple.

This becomes a good trade IF it is only the first shoe. Need a corner outfielder.

I don't disagree with the need for an OF, but I'm not sure how that need is factored into evaluating this trade singularly in and of itself.

It just isn't enough by itself. NOT saying however that this is not a good deal by itself. Picking up a proven entity for what appears to be a spare part is not shabby. Are the Pirates better with Lee? Theoretically, yes. Are the Pirates now true contenders with Lee? Theoretically, probably not.

It's a good trade by virtue of the fact that we can kiss Overbay goodbye. I can't watch another at bat with that guy. I don't even watch that many games. I feel for you guys. Even adding another bat probably doesn't make them a favorite for anything. Hopefully the moves extend the season and not kill the future.

    I don't disagree.

But evaluating a trade is just to look at the trade by itself. I see it as a win for the reasons you say above.
