Default Pirates Acquiring Of Lee and Ludwick Makes For A Good Trade Deadline This Year

July 31st came and went and for the first time since 2007 (center laughter and facepalms for the Matt Morris reference) the Pittsburgh Pirates were buyers.

Heading into the Trade Deadline the Pirates had 3 big needs ; Power, improvement at 1B and improvement in RF. All 3 of these needs were handled by acquiring 1B Derrek Lee and RF Ryan Ludwick.

An excited Derrek LeeWere these 2 the cream of the crop that went in Trades? Far from it, but the Pittsburgh Pirates aren't yet at the point where a Hunter Pence or a Carlos Beltran makes good enough logical sense. Their costs would've sucked too much from the Pittsburgh Pirates minor league system which is still in talent rebuilding mode and their value to the team is an uncertainty because nobody knows if the Pittsburgh Pirates divisional aspirations and Playoff charge can last a full season, not with the cracks showing in the Pitching Staff.

The Pirates needed an upgrade and the players along with the rest of the league needed to see the Pirates management make moves to improve the team right now as they are in a potential competition for the Playoffs for the first time since 1997.

    Why?

Confidence building and erasing the ugly perceptions of the Pittsburgh Pirates that have been built up through years of Kevin McClatchy, Dave Littlefield and Cam Bonifay lighting constant fires to the PBC and then taking joyous leaks to put the fires out. While it's true the Pittsburgh Pirates won't wipe the ugly perceptions away in a 1/2 of a season, they need to start at some point since they will need to use Free Agency to their advantage and future Trade Deadlines. They will want players to want to come here.

ID:	2978In doing so, the Pittsburgh Pirates made 2 moves that were of the low risk, high reward variety, dealing a 23 year old Minor League player at the A+ level in Aaron Baker and a PTNL which will include a list of C-Level prospects most likely. This is what the Pirates needed to be doing this year at the Trade Deadline. Making low cost moves to help improve the team while maintaining all of it's key future prospects and seeing where this season takes them. Remember, we still have the Offseason Free Agency to fill these same holes with longer term solutions, however by the Offseason we will have a full season of knowledge about this team going forward which is more than the uncertainty that 1/2 season delivers.

These moves should help the Pittsburgh Pirates offense even if it's a modest upgrade, but Derrek Lee and Ryan Ludwick will certainly make a lineup that's had a gigantic Hole in the middle of it,. more complete and offer protection for Andrew McCutchen and Pedro Alvarez. Offensive upgrades were never going to be enough if the Pitching Staff can't perform like it has in the first 1/2 of the season the rest of the way through. The series against the Philadelphia Phillies and St.Louis Cardinals cast more uncertainty about that occurring, which is why it was important for the Pirates to not empty it's better Prospects from the System, just yet.

There's a lot of Baseball remaining, the Pittsburgh Pirates have a chance. Derrek Lee and Ryan Ludwick should help the Offensive production, but the Pitching is and always will be key.

An additional note is that if Derrek Lee assumes #25, the Pirates could have a #24 and #25 in the lineup up again rockin' it like it's 1991

I sure as heck hope so. Our pitching has been good but if it comes down to pre-2011 levels, with our offensive production, we're royally screwed.
