    Default Woodley signs 6-year deal

LATROBE, Pa. – In the end, everybody got what they wanted.

When the Steelers placed the franchise tag on LaMarr Woodley back in March, he accepted the designation and made it understood that he wanted to finish his career with the Steelers. On Friday morning, the team and the player made that happen.

Woodley signed a six-year contract that will keep him with the team through the 2016 season. A second-round draft choice in 2007, Woodley has 39 sacks in 60 career games, 47 of which were starts. Also a guy who raises his game in the playoffs, Woodley has added 11 sacks in seven career postseason appearances.

In 2009, Woodley led the team with 13.5 sacks and was voted to his first Pro Bowl, and last season he recorded 10 sacks to join James Harrison as the only players in franchise history to post double-digit sack totals in back-to-back seasons.

Woodley also set an NFL record by posting two sacks in each of his first four playoff games. Woodley’s sack of Aaron Rodgers in Super Bowl XLV gave him three career sacks in Super Bowls, which ties him for second place all-time in that category.

As the Steelers franchise player, Woodley was to count $10 million on the team’s 2011 salary cap, and while this deal wasn’t necessary to get the team into compliance it will help them by reducing his cap number for this season.

Woodley announced the signing early on Friday morning via Twitter.

The Steelers won't release the details but the hit on the cap this year is roughly half of what the franchise tag would have cost so around 5 million salary plus a big bonus in year 1.

Glad to see this. While the Steelers claim they didn't need his cap space, I tend to think they did as I can see them signing someone who's cut before the season opens. Having cap space really helps that.

well they have to spend 99% of the total cap so if they are in surplus they will probably sign a veteran player. they missed out on al the good cb's though.

Steelers sign Woodley to $61.5 million deal
    Friday, August 05, 2011
    By Ed Bouchette, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
    Peter Diana/Post-Gazette
Steelers LaMarr Woodley gets Ryan Mundy in a head lock during a break in workouts at Saint Vincent College. Woodley today signed a $61.5 million contract with the Steelers.

The Steelers, who scrambled to get under the salary cap the past week, came to terms with linebacker LaMarr Woodley on a six-year, $61.5 million contract in the middle of the night.

The deal includes a $22.5 million bonus and will significantly reduce his previous salary cap number. He was to be on the books for about $10 million in 2010 because of the franchise tag the Steelers applied to him. His new salary cap number could be about half of that.

The deal makes the outside linebacker the highest paid player on defense and second-highest on the team behind only quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.

Woodley said on Wednesday that he did not think the sides were close on a new deal and had only opened formal negotiations on Monday.

I'm happy with having Woody for a long time. I hope this signing puts some fire into him and he crushes all quarterbacks this season. He always had the fire but I just hope it makes him play out of his mind.

P.S. For some reason it would have really bothered me seeing him play for another team.

Met him at the Clearview Mall his rookie season. Very nice man who stayed past the end time to make sure everyone got signed. I got a helmet, and my autograph Towel signed.
