Default Pirates Have Meeting After Dropping Their 9th Straight In Another Padres Blowout

Bob Biertempfel is reporting that the Pirates had a team meeting called by Matt Diaz directly after another humiliating loss, the 9th in a row. The Length of the meeting was supposedly short as some players were seen back out watching some of the Train concert that followed the game.

Some quotes from Paul Maholm following the loss..

we said what we had to say. Nothing serious. It sucks right now, losing nine is no fun for anybody.
Its got to be back to having fun...winning a laugher. Thats going to be what turns it. We can turn it around, thats all that matters

Nobody has an answer. I watched the Post Game and nobody has an answer. All through tonight's game teve Blass was trying to come up with an answer but there isn't one.

I've tried everything possible to stop a jinx :d I've run out of things.

Right now, the Pirates look lost everywhere. Starting Pitching, Relief Pitching, Offense, Defense. I'm sure the intent is well before the game but during the game that intent isn't happening. They simply need to grind out a win, reach deep down inside and pull one out. They have to get the monkey off of the back but there's no obvious remedy, it has to be a team effort

They are young, they burnt out... nothing more, nothing less. They can get back on track but only with a new focus and vision and that is supposed to be what a manager does.

Nobody has an answer because every aspect of the game sucks.

You can't blame the pitching. Even if they do well, the offense just isn't scoring.
You can't blame the offense. Even if they score 6 runs, it can't overcome double digits.
You can't blame the bullpen. Once the score is 6-1, what does 5 more runs matter?
You can't blame the starters. Even if they hold down the fort, the bullpen blows it.

I have NEVER seen anything like this where everything just sucks, and you can't just point your finger at one or two things. You can always tweak one or two things, maybe make some personnel moves, but you can't change everything at once, and that is why there are no answers.

What's it gonna take? It's gonna take one starting pitcher to shut down an opposing offense, and pitch a complete game shutout, and the offense just needs to grind out one run. My two candidates for that are Karstens, and (believe it not) McDonald.

While it's baffling, the wheels have just fell off the wagon and they have to figure out how to get them back on. I can buy the burnt out theory with all the emotions spent by a young team playing and winning alot of big games early on. You gotta figure that almost half the roster has been AAA players and even some AA for a majority of the season who got thrown into the fire immediately upon call-up. The Pirates will be better for this in the long run, but for now, it is what it is, young players trying to work their way out of a team wide slump.

The way Karstens last 3 starts have gone, I'm not sure a CG shutout from him is going to happen. Chuck Morton at this point is our best shot. Mcdonald can't last long enough in a game to go CG

But I agree overlal that it will take that type of pitching performance. morton ALMOST had in his last start but that was ruined by the BP

Speaking of a worn out BP. Why we sent down Watson for Lincoln BECAUSE the BP was gassed was odd. Woulda made more sense to bring up Moskos

I picked Karstens, because he is the one that has flirted with perfection twice since becoming a Pirate. That is the kind of dominating performance I have in mind. Not just a CG/SO with 5 hits and a walk. A complete shutdown that makes the game boring and frustrating for the other team's fans.

I picked McDonald because, IMO, he's the guy that is the biggest candidate to be pitching with major chip on his shoulder. I don't see him putting up a complete shutdown, so maybe he can't give us a full 9. But if he can go 7, and maybe even get into the eighth, and bring Hanrahan in early, that could do it too.

Looks like the meeting didn't help. 10 in a row now. Thank God for football season.

I really can't wait to see how they bounce back from this turmoil, the first of its kind this season. I am a firm believer that they can benefit from stretches like this in the long run. I just hope people don't start thinking that this detracts from what has been accomplished so far this season because it doesn't in any way. It is just another step in the rebuilding process that other teams have gone through as well and to say it wasn't expected at some point would be a little naive.

This is basically becoming the tale of two seasons right before our very eyes, and somewhere between the elation of early on and this 10 game losing streak lies the real Pittsburgh Pirates, which is still a much improved squad over last years team. we were there when they were winning, let us be there while they are struggling to return to the win column.

I am gonna predict a strong 7 inning performance from chad tommorow. 7k`s and lee and Cutchen provide us with a homerun each and we win 5-2 and start a strong turn around. I think Presly, tabata and chase are do back soon and we need to run.

Our best team is built like the Angels good speed on the basepads, solid pitching and defense.

I'll take that and be happy bouncing back from this skid will mean more to the Pirates than will being in first place two weeks ago. It's all about character.

Karstens has already exceeded his innings pitched from last year, its starting to show. They need to monitor him carefully. (Now someone told me he hasn't exceeded his number of pitches thrown, but I imagine its close)
