    Default Taylor out 2 weeks

    Steelers' Taylor out 2 weeks
By F. Dale Lolley, Staff writer dlolley@observer-reporter.com

Not only were the Steelers beaten in their preseason opener Friday night by the Washington Redskins, they were beaten up as well.

Pittsburgh had several players, including cornerback Ike Taylor, injured during its 16-7 loss at FedEx Field. Taylor suffered a broken left thumb.

"He could be out for a couple of weeks," Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said. "Whether or not he'll require surgery remains to be seen."

Considering how Pittsburgh's defensive backs have gone down with myriad leg injuries during training camp, the good news is Taylor will still be able to run.

Safeties Troy Polamalu and Will Allen, and cornerbacks Bryant McFadden, Cortez Allen and Curtis Brown missed the game with injuries, though Polamalu was held out as a precaution to rest his Achilles' tendon.

In addition to Taylor, who signed a four-year, $28-million contract last week, the Steelers also saw cornerbacks Crezdon Butler (quad) and Keenan Lewis (calf) suffer injuries against the Redskins.

Many of the injuries have occurred because the cornerbackss have spent so much on the field at Saint Vincent College chasing receivers. The Steelers have yet to have all of their top cornerbacks on the field at the same time in this camp.

"There's being in shape and there's football shape," said Butler. "We're all in good shape, but it's different when you have to go out there and cover receivers. That's tough to simulate on your own.

"Our coach just told us that we need to do a better job of stretching, make sure we're as loose as possible."

Washington took advantage of the depleted Pittsburgh secondary to pass for 312 yards, including 207 by starter Rex Grossman in the first half.

The defense played so poorly that, despite Tomlin saying his first-team units would see fewer than 10 plays each, the first-team defense stayed on the field well into the second quarter.

Tomlin, however, wasn't solely focused on the poor performance of the secondary.

"Quite frankly, we got outplayed in just about all areas: blocking, tackling, running, throwing, kicking," Tomlin said. "That team was better prepared tonight than us. They showed it. We accept that, and I look forward to this group responding to what we put out there tonight. We've got a lot of ground to cover."

    Odds and end zones

In addition to Polamalu, linebacker James Harrison (back) did not play. ... Also injured for the Steelers were wide receiver Wes Lyons (concussion) and defensive end Sunny Harris (foot). ... The NFL has moved kickoffs from the 30- to the 35-yard line. As a result, only one of seven kickoffs was returned. ... Pittsburgh punters Daniel Sepulveda and Jason Kapinos had excellent games. Each punted four times. Sepulveda, who suffered a torn knee ligament last year, averaged 51 yards and Kapinos averaged 49.8. ... Antonio Brown paced Pittsburgh's offense with four pass receptions for 64 yards. ... The Steelers return to practice today (2:55) at Saint Vincent College. Practice is open to the public.

    Taylor surgery 'probable'

    Sunday, August 14, 2011
    By Gerry Dulac, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

It is "probable" that cornerback Ike Taylor will have surgery after his left thumb was broken in the preseason opener Friday night against the Washington Redskins at FedEx Field, a team source said Saturday.

The source also said Taylor, who injured his thumb on the first defensive series, will be out about three weeks. That should allow him to return for the Sept. 11 regular-season opener in Baltimore.

Taylor and the Steelers do not have anything to prove in the preseason. Getting healthy for the Ravens should be the biggest priority.

Yep, this Preseason is all about player evaluation especially due to lockout issues. Vets will be ready to go.
