    Default What is progression?

For me, this might become one of the more disappointing seasons in this losing streak. Not because I expected a WS pennant or even a playoff spot. I did expect a vast improvement and had a high degree of confidence that a .500 season was realistic. And I fully admit that I got caught up in the 1st half success.

Sadly however, it appears quite likely the streak will continue for another year. Our record now sits at 56-63. 7 games below .500. We have 43 games left and would need to go 25-18 to reach that .500 figure. Can we? Doesn't appear likely. Remaining games look like this beginning tonight in StL.

    StL 10
    Mil 7
    Cin 6
    Chi 3
    Hou 6
    LA 5
    Fl 3
    Ariz 3

I can envision 4 from Cin, 2 from Chi, 4 from Hou, 2 from LA, 1 from Fla and 2 from AZ. That's 15 wins which means we would need 10 wins (out of 17 games) against StL and Mil. Maybe squeak out an extra game or 2 from LA, but typically playing on the west coast is not our strong suit.

So tell me. Am I seeing the glass as half full (the pessimist) or half empty (the optimist)?

You ain't the only one who got caught up in the first half success, I did too and believe we should have, dare to dream you know. I picked them to win 72-77 games and they may not even do that this year, but they have clearly shown me enough to say that they have progressed this season. I think they should have taken 2-3 from the Brewers and with any kind of offense they would have. Pitching was supposed to be the team weakness this season and it has been what has kept the Buccos in most games. The offense was actually improving with Presley and d'Arnaud at the top of the lineup because they took advantage of their speed, so let's see what happens when they come back and the lineup has some pop to go with that speed. Overall though, I like the direction this team is headed.

You're certainly a pessimist anyway you look at it.

To suggest that this season has been a failure or the most disappointing during this 19 year endeavor speaks for itself. This has probably been the most promising season we've had since 1992 and the best sign towards the future we've ever had.

Maybe we finish under .500. I would have liked to have seen us finish above .500 for the players and clubs confidence and to get that ugly cloud off of the shoulders of the players and franchise but if it doesn't happen, this season still has been "Progression"

    Why?

Because the most important ingredient towards winning showed up - Pitching.

The 1997 team was an illusion. A bunch of overachievers that you knew wouldn't last. This team, not so much. Nobody on the Offense has overachieved and the Pitchers that have performed well, always had the potential. Morton, Correia's bounce back, Maholm (Karstens is really the overachiever type here).. And there's a lot to take from THIS team and build towards next year and the future. More consistency from Cutch and Walker, hopefully something resembling production from Alvarez, not having the unfortunate luck of your Top 2 catchers in the organization getting injuries at the same time, filling holes at 1B and RF a little better than we did coming into 2010.

I really really like the direction this team is moving. It was always IMO unrealistic to expect us to compete for the Division the entire season. The lack of experience and the fact that the Brewers and Cardinals are deeper talent wise was something that any time of hot streak momentum was going to have problems with. I predicted/hoped for a 15 game improvement over the 2010 team and said a Littlefield-esque 68-72 win season would be a huge improvement and huge Progression. We could win more than that still
