Pirates trade right-hander Wood to Rangers
    By Staff and wire reports
    Friday, August 19 2011

The Pirates traded minor-league right-hander Tim Wood to the Texas Rangers on Thursday for either cash or a player to be named later.

Texas optioned Wood to Triple-A Round Rock.

The 28-year-old Wood was 0-3 with a 5.63 ERA in 13 games for the Pirates this season. He was leading the Triple-A International League with 23 saves for Indianapolis.

The Pirates designated Wood for assignment last Friday.

I thought wood was performing pretty **** well down in AAA. Nobody could hit off of him down there. Felt he was a nice piece to have for a tiring out BP. I'm thinking that there was some sort of strategic reasoning for this? Perhaps they didn't see him long termw ith the team and decided to get something for him now before the AAA season ends and we start call ups?

I read that Wood did not want to be in minors with his LAST TEAM and wanted cut loose...I imagine he had the same demands with the BBUUCCOOSS...

He sucked most of the time with us anyway...

Thats been his problem his entire career, he can't seem to produce at the MLB level. Still a guy I saw with some potential. You can't perform as well as he did at AAA this eyar and be a complete lost cause but I do remember the demands you are talking about. Probably more about sending a guy somewhere he has a better chance to get what he wants. The Pirates have done this a few times

Was he on the 40 man roster? Can't remember if he was just released and cleared waivers or not. If he was on the 40 man, it opens a spot for someone.

He was on the 40 man, but was removed when they activated Ohlendorf last week. He never actually made it to waivers. There's a 10 day period at the start where teams can try to work out a deal, and that's what they did here. Wood is now on the Rangers 40 man.

So it wasn't really a move to clear up 40 man space then?

It was a move to clear up the 40 man space for Ohlendorf to come off of the 60 day DL basically, not to open up a new one. Wood was DFAed, so if they didn't trade him within 10 days they would have had to try to pass him through waivers. Obviously he wouldn't have made it through waivers if the Rangers decided to trade for him.

I got ya now. I sort of misread the whole 10 day thing in your previous post or something

Makes sense then that this was a 40-man move.
