Default Pirates Need to Sign McCutchen

Simple as that. I'm glad we got some money going to the draft choices, I'm glad we signed Tabata, but the Buccos need to step up to the plate and sign Cutch. It was reported that talks have stalled between 22 and the Pirates. That's a bit unsettling to me. He will demand at least 14-15k a year and if we don't pay him what he's worth, then this team is gonna lose a lot of credit when it talks about building with young talent.

I say pay the man what he's worth. Hell... Pay him a bit more and keep him in black and gold for a long time.

It takes two to make a deal. His side doesn't want to talk right now so there isn't much to do. McCutchen is under team control through 2015 so it isn't like this has to be done this year.

That's true, but I'd like to see them be a bit more aggressive with it. Like I said, I live what they're doing, but I'm gonna feel a lot better when they ink down Cutch for the long haul.

They'll get something done during this offseason or next I'll bet. I know Cutch don't like negotiating during the season.

I'm sure the Bucs would jump at "$15k a year," but I know you mean $15 Million.

I agree with you, give it to him.

(Please note that the Cincy lineup has about four legitimate 25-35 HR guys in it and we have nada.)

Those things might matter to "Cutch," especially when there is no guarantee that the team will produce any lgihts out, #1 and #2 ptichers from their draftees.

But, it may be that Cutch doesn't want to spend his professional life in Pittsburgh.

If that is the case, there is nothing the Pirates can do about it. Otherwise, I'm confident he isn't going anywhere. I think it's more of him not wanting a contract that goes beyond his arbitration available year. But even so, I'm confident the Pirates will work something that will satisfy him that arbitration won't matter.

Jay Bruce signed for 5 year 60 mill with a 6 year team option,

Justin Upton signed 52 mill over 6 years

this should give the pirates a good idea of what it should cost.

I think he wants to see what the team puts around him before he commits long term. Walker and Tabata are a good start but show him your serious by signing a frontline starter like CJ willson and Another 20 homerun guy like Sizemore or cuddyer.
Willson 12 mill over 4 years, Sizemore coming off 2 knee injury can be had for about 6 mill on a 1 year deal. Logan Morrison we have enough guys in the minors that we might lose do the roster crunch to make him ours. Presley and Cain plus a 3rd C level pitcher probly gets it down. I read were Maholm is will do sign cheaper for an extension 3 year deal at 7 mill per seems fair. 25 mill in FA and we are only renting Sizemore until July cause by then Marte/grossman will be ready.

    Wood, Jones, Gorky 4th Of

    Tabata RF

    Chase SS

    McCuthen CF

    Logan Morrison 1st

    Walker 2nd

    SizeMore LF

    Alverez 3rd

Doumit C 60% of the time Fort 40%

    CJ 12 mill
    Morton
    Maholm
    Macdonald
    Karestens

Lincoln and Oldendor will compete for the 5th spot and long man

If they could buy out a year or two of 'Cutch free agency it's an absolutely huge move for the organization. It could make all the difference in pursuing free agents and getting other guys to sign through their Arb/FA years. They gotta keep trying even if they must overpay.
