    Default Hanrahan??

What would the Giants give us for Hanrahan, now that their closer went to the DL??

Do they have any AAA stud SS or powerhitting 1B?

Unfortunately, NOTHING now. His stock has greatly plummetted. Our timing really sucked. We should have melted down a little earlier....or at least cooled off a bit, so we could have traded Maholm and Hanrahan while they were worth something. Now it looks like we got Lee and Ludwick for nothing.

It's not that I don't like Hanrahan. Yeah, he's had a rough stretch. It's just that at age 29, I don't believe he figures into our future, which makes him expendable (as well as Maholm.)

His value hasn't fallen to nothing like you stated above. He still profiles as one of the top closers in the game. If they can make a trade that improves the product, I'm all for it. The problem is, you have to have replacements ready to step in, which in this case, the Pirates don't have. At some point, which I think has arrived, you can't continue to trade everything off for prospects. Regardless of where we stand now, there's probably going to be a season next year and positions will have to be filled and games will need to be won. I believe they still have control of Hanrahan for two more years, no need to rush out and trade him now that he's had a rough couple of games.

I was looking at Giant "needs," given Wilson's injury and the ability the PBC has shown to pick up FA relievers.

Hanrahan isn't garbage, quite the contrary. But if the other team has something you want (power hitting 1B or stud shortstop?), the Bucs may be able to swing a deal and I would do that.

Wouldn't he have to pass through waivers before a deal could be made?

There's no way that would happen.

yes he does. I would bet that some of them have already passed through or been pulled back. With Wilson hurt, teams chasing the Giants won't allow a closer to reach them. They already traded their top pitching prospect, I doubt they'd part with Belt.

Note on Hanrahan. Watch his followthrough. It looks like his front leg is landing way too stiff and he is too straight up. When front leg hits the ground he bounces a stutter step as the ball is released. The speed is there but not the control = BALL! It seemed like when he did that his pitch would go low and outside.

He isn't getting low and bringing his lower body and hips through the end of the motion. I always go back to Tom Seaver's delivery as a model of perfection with his dirty knee!

Hanrahan is still one of the top closers in baseball, who is going through a rough spot at the moment. Personally, I wouldn't trade him at all. 29 is still young for a closer and until they have someone ready to step into that role, they can't afford to trade him.

Personally, I don't buy into the "closer" role anyway. Why is someone who comes in in the 7th inning and shuts the other team down any less important. I want a relief pitcher who is effective in any inning he pitches. Sure there is a psychological thing about ending a game, but realistically, it doesn't always have to come down to one person.

Ok, following your line of thinking, are you suggesting the Pirates go into the 9th with a lead of two or more runs for a change so that any old reliever can go in with a nice cushion and finish it up? What would Brownie do if he couldn't utter the phrase "it's Hammer time as we head to the 9th" anymore?
