Default Pirates place pitcher Correia on DL

Pirates place pitcher Correia on DL
    Monday, August 22, 2011
    By Bill Brink, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
The Pirates placed starter Kevin Correia on the 15-day disabled list Monday because of a strained left oblique. They activated reliever Chris Leroux from the disabled list and recalled him to the active roster.

The Pirates have not announced a replacement for Correia, who was scheduled to start Wednesday. The move was retroactive to Aug. 20.

Leroux provided the bullpen with a fresh arm heading into Monday's doubleheader against the Milwaukee Brewers. Jose Veras and Joel Hanrahan were not available after pitching three consecutive days and Jason Grilli was limited.

While on a minor league rehabilitation assignment for a strained right calf, Leroux went 2-1 with a 2.08 ERA in 13 innings with Class AAA Indianapolis.

Correia previously won a game July 28 and lost three consecutive decisions. He had a 6.08 ERA in July and an 8.41 ERA in August.

Our starting pitching is just worn out.

Wonder how that happened? If we're lucky, he's out for the year and we can see what our 'younguns' can do?

If it were his arm I'd agree but this is an Oblique strain which really shouldn't have anything to do with fatigue. It's a shame tioo, because I felt that Correia looked good in his last start and to be honest outside of Maholm (who obviously had something pretty wrong with him), I feel as if the pitching staff has been or is rebounding. Karstens with a nice start, Morton has looked his best all season this month, McDonald has really been mroe or less the same except he's seeming to go longer in games recently which is a good sign since I feel that's a big part of his development - throwing less pitches

This will give Lincoln a shot to showcase his stuff to compete for the 5th spot next year. I think Oldendorf is scheduled to started for koria but I dont expect anything out of him. Hopefuly Maholm who has said he would be willing to sign an extension can get fully healthy cause I think he is a good option at 7 mill even if we have to sign him for 3 years or 2 with an option. Locke and company will need at least another half a season in AAA to season.

We know we have a solid 2,3,4 next year Morton, karestens,Macdonald.

I'm not sure how far along Ohlendorf is in his recovery. If healthy, Ohlendorf has some of the better mixes of stuff on this staff. He has a really nice mid 90's fastball with movement, his breaker is very nice and his size makes the approach difficult for hitters with how the ball comes out at such a height.

That said, not sure where he is in his recovery and it's a shame that he keeps getting injured.
when healthy, Ohlendorf puts up a nice 1.20-ish WHIP. He doesn't get hit real hard, maintaining a H/9 in the 8's. He struggles with control when he's not healthy and walks a lot of batters. when healthy, the BB/s are down, he doesn't get hit much healthy or unhealthy.

Lincoln put forth a nice performance yesterday. I was pretty impressed. After the 1st inning, he settled down really well and despite not really having any dominant stuff, no out pitches, not a ton of movement on his pitches, he was able to command the strike zone with what he had and dictated the Brewers batters.

Clint Hurdle said that Lincoln would remain in the starting rotation taking Correia's place.

I don't think anything has been made official yet, but I was told late last night that Aaron Thompson was on his way to Pittsburgh. I guess he'll start Wednesday, then Lincoln will take over from there out.

    Really?

Didn't Thompson just get promoted to Indy like 2 weeks ago?

Yeah, I think it's really just a case of him being the guy who was scheduled to start that day. I wouldn't expect him to stick around long. I kind of wanted to see Jeff Locke get the 1 day call, but he'd actually be going on short rest.
