printe-mailPITTSBURGH -- The Pirates designated reliever Joe Beimel for assignment on Tuesday in order to open up a roster spot for starting pitcher Ross Ohlendorf. Ohlendorf will start Tuesday's game against the Brewers.

Beimel, who signed a Minor League deal with the club in January, has battled arm issues off and on since Spring Training. He began the year pitching in rehab games and then went on the disabled list in late May. The left-hander didn't come off the DL until after the All-Star break.

He had been mostly ineffective since his return.

Left-handed reliever Joe Beimel gave up six home runs in just 25 1/3 innings pitched this season. (Getty Images)Beimel, an 11-year veteran, made eight appearances in August, and in three of those appearances, he did not record an out. He allowed four earned runs on 13 hits and two walks in 4 2/3 innings.

Overall this season, Beimel had a 5.33 ERA in 35 games. That certainly did not meet the Pirates' expectations for the reliever, who the club thought could step into a setup role.

    Beimel has been horrid.

Unfortunately our other lefty option Tony Watson has been equally as awful. After being lights out, in Watson's last 5 appearances he's given up 8 ER's in 6.1 IPs

Most of us expected some pitching woes later in the year. It happened, now we can observe some others with our expanded roster. Even more so, next month.

One the bullpen's biggest problems this year is the lack of a LOOGY (lefty one out guy). It's gotta be high on the NH shopping list this offseason.

I really think it's time for Beimel to get on with his life's work. Whatever ability he had, it's deteriorated to High-A level stuff.

Tony Watson has looked good for a rookie and is only gone get better. We have a lot young Relief Pitchers who will be competing for spots with the big club next year. A healthy Meek might make Hannerhan tradeable
