Report: Aaron Smith out until January
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on October 13, 2009 4:00 PM ET
Earlier Tuesday, Steelers coach Mike Tomlin revealed that stalwart defensive end Aaron Smith's shoulder injury "potentially could be significant."

In NFL coachspeak, that translates to a three-month absence.

Jim Wexell of Scout.com reports that Smith will undergo surgery for a torn rotator cuff that will knock him out until January. Tomlin will have to decide whether he can afford to carry Smith on the roster that long, especially if injuries continue to pile up.

Smith's loss is sigificant. He's probably the most underrated defender on the team over the last decade, although the Steelers do have quality depth behind him.

First-round pick Ziggy Hood and Travis Kirschke should pick up snaps with Smith out.

PFT isn't something to take to the bank, but they're.... generally right.

Chances are pretty good that they wouldn't say it if it were not fact, huh?

    I wouldn't go that far.

It's PFT. Take it for what it's worth. I only posted it as something to consider.

Okay , we'll wait and see but we already heard from Coach that it was significant so it sounds like we've lost Aaron for a long time.

I heard this on the radio today. I haven't heard wtf happened tho??? It is Ziggy's time to step up. #1 pick, let's go buddy! As terrible as it is, does it surprise you much? Guy is what 34? Sooner or later you have to face the fact that the guy is ****ing old. He may be up against the wall anyway. I think we will be ok regardless. I think this is the start of a new era where our O has to carry D more often than not.

As if we needed this. Hopefully Colbert and Tomlin can pull a rabbit out of the hat and maintain the run defense. Right now would be a good time for Ziggy to make his presense felt, while hoping Kirshke's back holds up.

Yeah, this has been all over Sirius NFL radio ("2 min drills") today. As much as we want to discount Florio's d-baggery, I'm afraid it came straight from MT's mouth... Let's go Ziggy!!!!! Step the F up brova!!!!

I think I may have jinxed AS on a thread o'er yonder.... He will be missed fa sho!

    Bad news!.... Vey bad news.

Well, we all had said at one point that injuries were a key to the success this season... Let's see how this squad handles adversity.

I think we "respond in a manner that is typical of Steelers football" (from the mouth of MT)... I am licking my chops to see what Ziggy brings to the table!!!! Granted, he cannot replace Smith (or even attempt, at this point), but he's got a great opportunity to get some PT and prove his worth! Worst case, Kirshke is VERY servicable (and will most-likely get the nod)
