Well I say IR him...don't hold a roster spot for him to MAYBE return in January...if we even play deep into January. Let some others get some invalueable experience. Kirshke, Eason, and Ziggy can battle for time....just hope we suffer no more injuries...or we gonna have to go shopping...which the FO is probably doing right now.

Tomlin said Smith suffered the injury Sunday against the Detroit Lions, but was not specific. Smith, typically a three-down player, first left the game with 12:14 remaining in the third quarter on a 3rd-and-15 play. Travis Kirschke and first-round draft pick Ziggy Hood replaced Smith for the next three snaps, but Smith returned with 9:52 left in the third and played four snaps, including a field-goal attempt during which Smith raised his right arm in an attempt to block the kick.
With 6:00 left in the third, a quarter in which the Steelers had only five offensive snaps, Smith returned, and at times extended only his left arm. He was replaced by Hood with 4:30 left in the third, returned with 2:47 left in the third for one play, and was again replaced by Hood. Smith came back for a final play with 1:25 left in the third on 3rd-and-7, which the Lions converted with a run by fullback Jerome Felton. Smith was blocked easily on the play and didn't return.
Tomlin was asked today whether Hood would replace Smith in the starting lineup Sunday against the Cleveland Browns.

"He's a young guy that's on the come," Tomlin said. "He's got a lot of talent. He's not out of the oven yet ... By no means is Ziggy Hood a replacement for Aaron Smith at this point. It'll probably be a committee of bodies who'll try to fill that void?"

    A committee?

"The usual suspects: Travis Kirschke, Nick Eason, Ziggy Hood," Tomlin said.

Here's something from a more credible news source which sort of affirms the bad news:

    http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=4556224

PITTSBURGH -- Pittsburgh Steelers defensive end Aaron Smith has a partial tear of the right rotator cuff, a source told ESPN.com's John Clayton.

Smith is weighing whether or not to have shoulder surgery, according to a source. Smith and doctors are expected to decide Wednesday morning which option to take. Multiple sources say if Smith has the operation, he could be out for as long as three months. If he opts not to have the surgery, he might not miss many games but he could do long-term damage to his career after this season.

Smith, injured Sunday in Detroit, was evaluated Tuesday.

Smith has been with the Steelers (3-2) longer than any player except wide receiver Hines Ward and defensive back Deshea Townsend. He is one of the keys to their 3-4 alignment and is often cited by teammates as being the most underrated player on what was the NFL's top defense the last two seasons.

Smith has 13 tackles and two sacks in five games and blocked a field goal attempt during the Steelers' 13-10 victory over Tennessee on Sept. 10. He also is one of the Steelers' primary run stoppers.

Coach Mike Tomlin said first-round draft pick Ziggy Hood is not yet ready to replace Smith, and that Travis Kirschke, Nick Eason and Hood would be used in his place.

"He's got a lot of talent," Tomlin said of Hood, the former Missouri player. "He's not out of the oven yet, if you will. We acknowledge that. He acknowledged that. And as long as we continue to do that, he'll move in the right direction. ... But by no means is Ziggy Hood a potential replacement for Aaron Smith at this point."

The 33-year-old Smith sat out the last four games of the 2007 season because of a torn biceps muscle.

Steelers safety Troy Polamalu, who has missed four games due to a torn left knee ligament, and running back Willie Parker (left big toe) are expected to return Sunday against the Cleveland Browns (1-4). Parker has missed two games.

Tough decision for him...wonder if they have a brace he could wear that would not affect him? Of course him opponents would go after his shoulder.

    Smith's season officially over.

During his regular weekly news conference yesterday, Coach Mike Tomlin revealed that Aaron Smith had injured his right shoulder, and that the situation “potentially could be significant.”

It turned out to be precisely that, and the Steelers placed Smith on the injured reserve list because of the shoulder injury. The injured reserve list means Smith’s season is over.

When asked yesterday about the team’s options in light of Smith’s injury, Tomlin said, “The usual suspects. Travis Kirschke, Nick Eason and Ziggy Hood.”

To take Smith’s spot on the roster, the Steelers signed Sonny Harris from the Carolina Panthers’ practice squad. Harris was the Steelers’ sixth-round draft pick last April, and when he came to training camp the hope was that he would develop sufficiently to contribute as a practice squad player as a rookie.

But after a summer in which Harris showed consistent improvement and concluded the preseason in Carolina with a nice game that included a sack, the Panthers claimed him when the Steelers put him on waivers. Because of needs at other positions, Harris subsequently was waived and signed to the Carolina practice squad. The Steelers also had plans to work out veteran Orpheus Roye.

As the team’s most recent No. 1 draft choice, Hood naturally is attracting the most attention, and Tomlin was asked about the rookie’s readiness for an expanded role.

“He has played in just about every football game he’s had a helmet on,” said Tomlin. “He has played on special teams in some games, he has had more defensive snaps in others. He played a pretty significant portion of the game this past week (in Detroit). He’s a young guy who’s on the come. He’s got a lot of talent. He’s not out of the oven yet, if you will. We acknowledge that, he acknowledges that. As long as we continue to do that, he’ll continue in the right direction. He’ll continue along those lines in terms of participation, but by no means is Ziggy Hood a potential replacement for Aaron Smith at this point. It will probably be a committee of bodies trying to fill that void.”

Make no mistake, no Aaron Smith creates a void. Smith has been with the Steelers longer than any players except Hines Ward and Deshea Townsend and long has been considered a key ingredient to the Steelers 3-4 alignment.

When Smith was injured late in the 2007 and was forced onto the injured reserve list after the seasons 13th game, the Jaguars, Rams and Ravens rushed for 224, 90 and 180 yards, respectively over the last three weeks of the regular season. Smith’s teammates regularly call him the most underrated player on the defense.

Through five games this season, Smith had 13 tackles, two sacks and 14 pressures, and he also blocked a field goal attempt during the Steelers’ 13-10 win over Tennessee on Sept. 10.

This is really bad news. When Smith went out in "07" the run "D" suffered greatly as did the over all line play, and that was when Hampton was still pretty good. Now we have guys filling in for Smith and Hampton, because,I don't know if it's just me,but every time I see Casey lately,he seems to be standing on the sidelines. Now we have a line minus Smith and Hampton's declining play.

Steelers could be at loss to replace DLE Smith.

When DLE Aaron Smith missed the Steelers' last four games of the 2007 season (including the playoff loss to Jacksonville) with a torn biceps, opponents ran wild on Pittsburgh, racking up 157.3 yards per game on the ground. And again, the Steelers will have to adjust to life without Smith after the rugged end suffered a season-ending shoulder injury in Week Five. Head coach Mike Tomlin said the Steelers will rotate veterans Nick Eason and Travis Kirschke as well as rookie Ziggy Hood at Smith's spot, and the obvious concern is whether Pittsburgh will find a combination that works — and whether opponents will again feast on what has long been one of the NFL's best run defenses with Smith a fixture on the left side of the line. The upcoming schedule does the Steelers no favors. After facing the Browns in Week Six, the Steelers draw Minnesota, Denver and Cincinnati, all of whom boast potent running games.

It was bad when we lost him before. However I think we're better prepared this time around or at least I have my fingers crossed.
In 2007 Clark was out as well, TK had back surgery after the season, so although he still has back issues, hoping they aren't as bad. It was Eason's first year and he played much better last year. We also didn't have a #1 draft pick.
