That means that Aaron Smith is likely done...and we could be screwed. Our D has already been under performing.

I am glad to see Harris back. Let's hope Kirshke's back holds up as well, if it does, things may not be so bad.

This might be the moment that brings home to the D the magnitude of underperformance. It sometimes takes a crisis of some sort to fire the neurons. Shame it might take Smith getting hurt to bring it about.

I think Sweet posted a link from PFT yesterday saying that Smith is done till January.... So it looks as if it might be true, unfortunately.

Injuries are the one thing that will hold us back, as many of us stated months ago.... Troy was a setback... Smith could be downright debilitating to the squad... We all remember '07... So let's see how they handle it. As you said, they haven't really been performing superbly so far already.

"As for Smith, the Steelers can place him on injured reserve, thus ending his season, or they can keep him on the 53-man roster - ala Rod Woodson in 1995 - and hope that the surgery he has later this week will allow him to return in January."

Aaron Smith out for season; Steelers sign rookie Harris
    Wednesday, October 14, 2009
By Gerry Dulac and Ed Bouchette, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Defensive end Aaron Smith, who sustained a torn rotator cuff injury against the Detroit Lions, has been placed on the injured reserve list, ending his season.

To replace Smith on the 53-man roster, the Steelers have signed rookie defensive end Ra'Shon "Sonny" Harris, their sixth-round draft choice who was cut in September. Harris has been on the Carolina Panthers practice squad.

Coach Mike Tomlin said Smith's injury will force the Steelers to use a committe of players to replace him, including veterans Travis Kirschke and Nick Eason and No. 1 draft choice Ziggy Hood.

Smith is one of the most underrated defensive ends in the league because his specialty is playing the run, not sacking the quarterback. The last time the Steelers played without Smith, 33, for an extended period, their rush defense all but collapsed.

That was in December 2007, when Smith tore a bicep in a game against the New England Patriots and missed the final three regular season games and a playoff game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Steelers had the league's No. 2 ranked rush defense at the time.

In those four games without Smith, the Steelers allowed 629 yards rushing, an average of 157.2 yards per game.

I can't see Sunny (or Sonny or Sonie or whatever) Harris helping much other than filling a position. Heck if Ziggy, a 1st rd pick and practicing all year, isn't ready, how does Harris, a 6th rd pick and not even practicing with the team since training camp, make up for Smith's loss. Time for Timmons to earn his paycheck now.

Thought I was the only one to notice that.

Anyway,I can't figure out why,but I have a strange suspicion that we will be pleasantly surprised this time around with Smith's replacements.

Well.... the nice thing is that we face the Browns this week. The bad thing is that the following week we face the vikings and they will pound the rock with Peterson and test out that D-Line. If Childress does his homework, he'll see what happened the last time that Smith was out. The only positive is that we could have Troy back by then.

Correct me if I'm wrong but when Smith went down in '07, wasn't Troy either injured at the same time or not playing anywhere near 100% and Ryan clark was out injured as well? I just remember that defense getting hit hard all at once

Thought it was just Clark and Smith at the time. Both injuries(at the same time) devestated this defense.

Well we are probably going to have to score a **** ton now. It is what it is. We will most likely be looking at an average defense the rest of the way. Then again maybe a starter will emerge, hopefully Ziggy.
