    Default Yankees Evil Geniuses

Why use the word genius? Well, they set the market to a level only they can afford. Think about it, they sign Mark Texeira for 8 years at $18M a season. What does this result in? Where do you think Albert Pujols contract discussions will start?

Every premier player will use the Texeira contract as a reference. Or the premier pitchers will reference what Sabathia is getting.

For teams, like St. Louis, who have the means to keep a Pujols, they don't have unlimited resources. That means they can't go out and sign that top tier free agent they covet, thus the free agent now looks to New York for his payday.

The Yankees set the market at a level so high, even the Boston's and Philadelphia's struggle to keep up.

Even if the Yankees don't sign every top free agent, they make more top free agents available to them for this reason alone.

Luckily blind Bud can't see this as an issue. When one team signs the top 3 free agents in one off season followed by winning the World Series, even Blind Bud should be able to see they bought the championship. What does that do to the integrity of the game?

Just one of the many things that enables the Yankees to buy wins and championships while the rest of the league either ignores the problem or are too afraid to speak up against it.

I'm not sure that I would even call what the Yankees are doing in this instance "genius". It's more of a domino affect than anything. They have the resources and revenue to outspend anyone in the league and when there's a player that they want, they will grossly overpay them to make sure they don't think twice of going somewhere else. The Yanks dictated the market a long time ago when they handed out lavish contracts then. they are now paying guys based on the principal that they created a while back. Basically they are competing against themselves.

What makes me go against the "genius" part is that they've grossly overpaid so many players to the extent that they are wasting so much money. the Yankees have a horrlbe number in correlation with wins per dollar spent. they've created it though. The Yankees all along could've still always overspent for what they wanted BUT not at the cost that they do it at that.

Still, the problem exists that the Yankees have been driving up prices for players for so long in MLB that it makes it really difficult for other teams to not only retain their best players but retain their best players and be able to afford to surround them with good talent as well. It's a problem that is going to continue to exist for as long as MLB ignores having a salary cap or eating into the Yankees ticket and local tv revenue cash cows. It's ncie to see a story about the 2008 Tampa Bay Rays overachieving and making the playoffs with a limited revenue but the fact is, it will be difficult for them to retain that good youth they have when they hit their prime and are ready to cash out on some big money. You can keep one or 2 maybe, but it's going to cripple your ability to surround that talent unless you are lucky out in the draft and minor league development.

There's simply a large disparity between what smaller market teams have to do in order to provide both winning and long lasting competitive teams and what a team like the Yankees have to do (throwing out money from revenue based on the large market they are located in)
