    Default Playoff Scenario's

Still a little early to predict what will go down...but here is a list of the current AFC playoff contenders and what could very easily happen.....let's hope my predictions come true......

    Baltimore
    Current: 5-5 Predicted: 9-7 or 8-8
    Pittsburgh - Win
    @ Green Bay - Loss
    Detroit - Win
    Chicago Win/Loss
    @ Pittsburgh - Loss
    @ Oakland - Win

    Denver
    Current: 7-4 Projected: 10-6 or 9-7
    @ KC - Win/Loss
    @ Indy - Loss
    Oakland - Win
    @ Philly - Loss
    KC - Win

    Houston
    Current: 5-5 Projected: 10-6 or 9-7
    Indy - Loss
@ Jacksonville - Win or Loss
    Seattle - Win
    @ St. Louis - Win
    @ Miami - Win
New England - Win (NE resting starters)

    Jacksonville
    Current: 6-4 Projected: 10-6 or 9-7
    @ SF - Win
    Houston - Win or Loss
    Miami - Win
    Indy - Loss
    @ New England - Loss
    @ Cleveland - Win

    Pittsburgh
    Current: 6-4 Projected: 11-5 or 10-6
@ Baltimore - Win or Loss
    Oakland - Win
    @ Cleveland - Win
    Green Bay - Win
    Baltimore - Win or Loss
    @ Miami - Win

Best case scenario with the above happening would be the following:
    1 Seed - Colts @ 16-0 - Bye
    2 Seed - Patriots @ 13-3 - Bye
    3 Seed - San Diego @ 12-4
    4 Seed - Cincinnatti @ 11-5
    5 Seed - Pittsburgh @ 11-5
    6 Seed - Denver @ 10-6

Worse case scenario is the Steelers end the year at 10-6 but don't make the playoffs because the Jaguars and Denver go 10-6 and we lost more AFC games than them. By projection lets assume the following teams end up 10-6 and so do we:

Steelers would have 5 AFC Losses (Cincy 2x, Rats 2x, KC)

Denver would have 4 AFC Losses (Ravens, Steelers, Bolts, Indy...but not sure if our head to head win would be first tie breaker over conf. loss)

Jacksonville would have 4 AFC Losses (Colts, Titans, Indy, Pats)

Houston would have 5 AFC Losses (Jets, Jags, Colts, Titans, Indy)

Baltimore would have 4 AFC Losses (Pats, Cincy 2x, Indy)

So essentially out of this.....if the Steelers go 10-6 in my scenario, it would have been Baltimore knocking them off twice. So obviously the Rats would get in over them with the head to head and only 4 AFC losses.

Jacksonville would also get in ahead of us as they only have 4 AFC losses.

I think we would get in over Denver as we beat them head to head but I am not sure if the AFC record would come before head to head.

Going to be interesting down the stretch......

With this....I predict the Steelers split with the Ravens and win the rest and the following transpires:

3 vs. 6: San Diego vs. Denver with San Diego winning
4 vs. 5: Cincinnatti vs. Pittsburgh with Pittsburgh winning (REVENGE)

2 vs. 3: San Diego vs. New England with New England winning
1 vs. 5: Indianapolis vs. Pittsburgh with Pittsburgh winning

2 vs. 5: New England vs. Pittsburgh with Pittsburgh winning

AFC vs. NFC: Pittsburgh vs. Minnesota with Pittsburgh winning the Superbowl in almost the same path that led them to XL other than beating the Donkeys for the AFC strap we beat the Patriots in their house so their fans can feel the sting and we solidify ourselves as the team of the decade.

Nicely thought-out post with a fairly valid/accurate possible outcome IMO... Not to beat a dead horse, but personally I'm not sure whether we have the "luck" or "bounce of the ball" to get us all the way there... But hey, as Kip has said before, "it's a whole new game once you get into the playoffs"... I guess some quality momentum in December would go a long way for the confidence level going into the playoffs.

BTW, if we WERE to end-up at 10-6 with the Ratbirds sweeping us twice, we would deserve to be on the outside looking in IMO.

It's gonna be interesting with the recent developments concerning the game this week and Ben sitting out... In the past seasons, this team has done rather well when dealing with adversity and their backs against the wall.... Maybe this is just such an "issue" to pull team unity together and strengthen their resolve... We'll see.

Here is the link to all of the tiebreaker rules. Test on Monday!

    http://www.49erswebzone.com/nfltiebreaker.php

TO BREAK A TIE FOR THE WILD-CARD TEAM
If it is necessary to break ties to determine the two Wild-Card clubs from each conference, the following steps will be taken.
If the tied clubs are from the same division, apply division tie breaker.
If the tied clubs are from different divisions, apply the following steps.
    Two Clubs

    [HIGH-LIGHT]Head-to-head, if applicable.[/HIGH-LIGHT]
Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the conference.
Best won-lost-tied percentage in common games, minimum of four.
    Strength of victory.
    Strength of schedule.
Best combined ranking among conference teams in points scored and points allowed.
Best combined ranking among all teams in points scored and points allowed.
Best net points in conference games.
Best net points in all games.
Best net touchdowns in all games.
    Coin toss.

If the Steelers and/or Denver and San Diego are tied, then the Steelers win the tie breaker.

[HIGH-LIGHT]1[/HIGH-LIGHT] I totally agree. Would be crazy to make the playoffs after getting swept by 2 of the 3 teams in our division.

[HIGH-LIGHT]2[/HIGH-LIGHT] I don't even know what to expect if Dixon runs the show. Lots of runs and punts with them not allowing Dixon to throw much I would guess. Lets see if Bruce holds to his word when he loves to claim the gameplan doesn't change no matter who is in there.

I think that if they do baby him and don't let him throw, that takes away really what he brings to the table. His game, from what I have seen of it, is to scramble and make teams pay for the pocket breaking down with his legs. I guess I just hope they actually give him a chance to play instead of handcuffing him with run, run, 3rd & 8 draw play-screen-stay pattern-etc. I hope they let him play. If they do, we might all be surprised.

I agree, after todays news, I'm not thinking about playoffs anymore, at least not for a while, until we see where this team is headed. Not that I don't want them to make it or think that they can't...it is just not prudent at this time to go through the scenarios...maybe in a few weeks, let's see where we stand.
I figure our odds are 50/50 tomorrow now. Flip a coin.

I've gone from seeing where we can over take Cincy for the AFC North to just taking it one game at a time. Funny what a couple bad losses and injuries will do to your perspective on things. I'll start thinking about the playoffs again after a few wins.
