    Default Ike to be benched?

Tomlin may bench some starters against Cleveland
    Monday, December 07, 2009
    By Ed Bouchette, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Mike Tomlin promised possible sweeping changes to the Steelers lineup for their next game in Cleveland Thursday night.

Enduring a four-game losing streak that has knocked his team to 6-6, Tomlin said there is an "undesirable pattern of behavior" in losing games in the fourth quarter and that he will take an "aggressive look at potential changes" in his lineup and his schemes.

Among the changes he noted is the likelihood that rookie cornerbacks Joe Burnett and Keenan Lewis not only will play but could start against Cleveland and that veteran cornerback Ike Taylor possibly could lose his starting job.

Did he end up seriously hurt last game or not? I don't remember. (Read as: I don't care).

Concussion, so he would be out Thursday, regardless.

As frustrating as Ike is, he is our best corner by far. We need to get more out of him, not bench him. I assume that is why his name was leaked (note, Tomlin did not say it). They are just trying to motiovate him. He was standing around all game.

This defense will be a 4-3 next year after LeBeau quietly retires the second week of January.

It will be an ugly year for the defense next year too.

He is our best corner BUT, sometimes riding the pine is proper motivation. It makes that player try a little harder to retain his job when he gets the chance to play again, makes him focus better and do better in practice and hopefully in the games.

Something needs to be done, our DB's can't cover the ****tiest WR's in the game right now and it's not like the defensive scheme isn't putting them in positions to succeed either. Ike and Gay have been there and are either getting burnt by garbage WR's or are allowing them to catch anything thrown in their directions.

It would be really nice if we had a DB that had the ability to read routes a little bit and get some jumps on balls. Our DB's NEVER do this. Seems like Troy is the only player that has the brain power or puts in the time in the film room to enable this to happen.

I'll give Tomlin some credit for having the balls to sit Taylor

People portray the 4-3 with the tampa 2 style coverage as soft or not as hardcore as the 3-4, but the Saints looked very scary defensively vs. the Pats.

The Giants also spanked the Pats in the SB with the 4-3. It would be easier to project college players to the 4-3 as well making drafting easier.

Yeah, well the team is built for a 3-4 and has been running a 3-4 for those players career.

By the time they beef up the line needs for a 4-3 and get the players on the defense into sync in playing a 4-3 the offense will need to be rebuilt.

Ben will have had six or seven concussions and be heading into an early retiremnent, Hines will retire, Tone will be long gone in FA and Mendy will be reaching the average length of a running backs career.

One man's ego is about to slam shut the window on a potential dynasty from ever happening.

    **** him.

Tom Brady has had some problems against the 4-3 but it's all reliant on pressure getting to him. He does better against the 3-4 but he also practices against it and sees it more.

Ben is pretty similar. He has problems at times against an aggressive 4-3. He has trouble picking up blitzes and reading them, but fairs well against 3-4's probably since he sees it more.

I just don't think we have the personnel to run an effective 4-3. We really lack the size and I see us in a 4-3

In Taylor's defense there had to be miscommunication amongst the DB's, he surely thought he had inside help.

    With that said:

    1. Will sitting Ike improve the team play?
    2. Will sitting Ike improve his play for the future?
    3. Does Tomlin feel he can win without him starting/playing?
    4. Is this Tomlin's version of unleashing fury and hell?

As slim as it is, we STILL have an outside shot of making the playoffs and benching Ike to me does not improve the chances of achieving that.

If he plays like **** against Cleveland and then all hopes are lost for post season play, then bench him and give the rooks a look.

I'm excited to see what Burnett and Lewis do out there. And you couldn't pick a better spot than in Cleveland. I still don't understand why these guys weren't seeing action earlier this year, though. Gay has progressively played worse as the year's worn on and Townsend is either a non-factor or liability in the nickel so far this season.

As far as Taylor goes. There isn't a game that goes by that I don't yell some expletive at him from my couch. He's been great at times in the past but he continually plays like a lazy, stupid CB who makes dumb mistakes over and over again. I hate saying that but it's true. He was horrible last week against the Ravens going up against over the hill WR's.

I read on another site that Taylor has actually been targeted more times than any other CB this year. I think teams have realized that there is absolutely no chance he's picking a pass off and if that's the case then why not throw against him? You've effectively eliminated one of the negatives of passing. Now it's either going to be a completion, incompletion or a PI call. Gotta like those odds. Or in the case of Taylor, PI and holding on the same play! Factor in his horrible ball awareness and it's a no brainer.
